Junto con el sistema endócrino, la función del sistema nervioso es la coordinación, regulación y asociación de las reacciones que suceden en el organismo, permitiendo así que todas las actividades se desarrollen de manera controlada y efectiva. El sistema nervioso se encarga de recibir los impulsos provenientes del medio ambiente y de los órganos internos, codificar la información y producir una respuesta adecuada a través de los órganos efectores. El sistema nervioso se clasifica desde un punto de vista anatómico o fisiológico. Desde un aspecto anatómico o estructural se divide en sistema nervioso central y sistema nervioso periférico. El sistema nervioso central está formado por el encéfalo y la médula espinal, órganos situados en cavidades específicas y protegidos por los huesos del cráneo y la columna vertebral. El sistema nervioso periférico, formado por ganglios y nervios periféricos, se sitúa por fuera de las estructuras óseas ocupadas por el sistema nervioso central. Sus ramificaciones nerviosas se distribuyen por todo el organismo recibiendo impulsos sensoriales o transmitiendo información motora. De esta forma, el sistema nervioso periférico establece una conexión entre el sistema nervioso central y los órganos corporales.
