Allí está la crónica de 1865 cuando Carlota viajó hasta Yucatán y Campeche para recorrer una zona olvidada por el imperio de Maximiliano. Para la misma época, en la capital del país las mujeres tenían pocos lugares donde dar a luz, que no fueran sus propias casas. La inyección económica que le dio la emperatriz a la Casa de Maternidad permitió que más mujeres, especialmente pobres, tuvieran mejores condiciones de salubridad para los partos. Pero una vez que se tuvo que regresar a Francia, a punto de caer el imperio, otra mujer, Luciana Arrázola de Baz, marcó la senda final por donde debería ir la atención de la salud. Se destacan las contribuciones del trabajo voluntario de las mujeres en dicho hospital entre el Segundo Imperio Mexicano y los primeros años de la República Restaurada.
