ABSTRACT –Para Rosa, colega sin par Dado mi interés en el retrato literario, no es de extrañar qu... more ABSTRACT –Para Rosa, colega sin par Dado mi interés en el retrato literario, no es de extrañar que los poemas biográficos de Carilda Oliver Labra me hayan intrigado desde el momento en que leí, hace años ya, su magnífico soneto “Carilda.” Al descubrir más recientemente que en 1998 publicó en México un poemario titulado Biografía lírica de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, mi interés se despertó de nuevo, sobre todo, cuando la fecha me hizo sospechar que había sido escrito en 1995, ocasión del tricentenario de la muerte de la monja. Imaginar que una ya madura Oliver Labra había escrito un retrato de una figura tan insólita para su época como lo fue Sor Juana, me motivó a leerlo. Me atraía la idea de investigar qué aspectos de la persona/obra de la monja colocaba en primer plano. Mi sorpresa fue grande, sin embargo, cuando al ver el libro descubrí que fue escrito en 1951 – es decir, no para el tercer aniversario de la muerte de Sor Juana, como yo creía, sino para el de su nacimiento, y por tanto, no por una escritora septuagenaria, sino por otra veinteañera.1 El desconcierto que produce el desfase histórico de este poemario es característico de la reacción que con frecuencia se experimenta al leer gran parte de la obra carildiana. En este ensayo examino las causas históricas de tal desconcierto y analizo la Biografía lírica en el contexto literario de 1951, época de relativa calma política en Cuba durante la que floreció la poesía social y la afro-cubana al lado de las tendencias neo-románticas y “puristas” u “origenistas” que se reflejan tanto en los poemas carildianos como en los de algunos de sus compañeros de Generación – la del 50. Carilda Oliver Labra (Cuba, 1922-) inició su exitosa y larga carrera en las letras cubanas en 1949 con la publicación de su segundo libro, el poemario Al sur de mi garganta, galardonado en 1950 con el prestigioso Premio Nacional de Poesía.2 El Premio, más el entusiasta reconocimiento de la crítica y las alabanzas de los poetas, auguraban un brillante futuro para la joven escritora, que se refleja, por ejemplo, en las palabras de elogio con que Gabriela Mistral recibe su obra, “[su poesía, ] . . . profunda como los metales, dura como el altiplano . . . de ser divulgada con justicia, ejercerá pronto ardiente magisterio en América” (El don perpetuo 230). Eventualmente, las expectativas se confirmaron, y Alfredo Zaldívar podría afirmar en 2004 que Oliver Labra “[es] quizás hoy el poeta vivo más popular de Cuba” (9). No obstante el éxito final, alcanzar esta meta no fue fácil: el desbarajuste social causado por la Revolución Cubana se interpuso de pronto en su camino. Y esto a pesar de que la poeta había escrito un “Canto a Fidel” que se convirtió en el himno de los insurgentes de la Sierra Maestra. De imprevisto, Oliver Labra fue “vetada” por el gobierno, no obstante la prueba de adhesión al régimen, implícita en el himno y en otros versos de la autora, además de su firme negativa a abandonar el país para unirse en el exilio con sus padres y hermanos. El “largo eclipse editorial” que sigue al veto le impidió publicar y dar a conocer su obra en Cuba durante largos años; entre 1963 y 1978 su poesía dejó de existir oficialmente, y aunque ella escribía, se desconocían sus textos y su evolución estética (Zaldívar 9).3 El fin del veto tampoco resolvió el problema. Es más, desde el punto de vista de la lectura orgánica de su poesía, lo complicó, ya que los textos inéditos comenzaron a publicarse de manera arbitraria, dificultando su ubicación ordenada dentro de una obra que por años se había mantenido, y en parte todavía se mantiene, en la oscuridad.4 Los libros que se publican a partir de la d...
