Although mammals of the Superorder Xenarthra (sloths, anteaters, and armadillos) have been implicated as reservoirs for several zoonotic agents, only few studies have sought to detect Anaplasmataceae agents in this group of mammals. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of Anaplasma spp. and Ehrlichia spp. in blood and spleen samples of free-living Xenarthra from four different states in Brazil (São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia, and Pará). Nested and conventional PCR screening assays were performed to detect the rrs and dsb genes of Anaplasma spp. and Ehrlichia spp., respectively. Fracture fixation should promote adequate stability and early return to limb function, taking into account biomechanical characteristics of the bones, body weight, and natural habits of wildlife. Three bone fractures from two giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) referred at the veterinary teaching hospital on different occasions were treated by a double plating technique. The two free-ranging anteaters incurred their injuries when struck by an automobile. Em outubro de 2007, foram colhidas amostras de sangue de 279 animais, entre equinos, suinos, caprinos, ovinos, bovinos e caes. Desses animais, 87 (31,1%) foram reagentes a Leptospira spp., pela prova de soroaglutinacao microscopica (SAM). Em marco de 2008, foram colhidas amostras de sangue de 236 animais, entre equinos, suinos, caprinos, ovinos, bovinos, caes, coelho, gambas e cervideos. Abstract: Clostridium perfringens types A and C, which are gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-formin... more Abstract: Clostridium perfringens types A and C, which are gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacteria, can cause necrotic enteritis in birds. Although Clostridium perfringens is considered a commensal organism in the avian intestinal tract, in association with severe stress, other infectious agents, or immunosuppressive conditions, it can cause disease outbreaks. This report describes a disease occurrence of necrotic enteritis caused by C perfringens in macaws (Ara ararauna). Two adult male blue and gold macaws maintained in a zoo exhibit were presented for postmortem examinations after histories of sudden death. Based on the gross examinations and microscopic evaluation of submitted tissue from both birds, the cause of death was determined to be necrotic enteritis. Microbiologic assays followed by polymerase chain reaction analyses identified the isolated strains as C perfringens type A, indicated by only being positive for the cpa gene that encodes the α-toxin. The birds were maintained in an exhibit in which patrons can interact with the animals within their environment. Thus, organisms, such as this pathogen, may present a danger for other birds because visitors could disperse the bacterium to other parts of the zoo.

Around 20 days later, bilateral accentuated swollen on humerus-radius-ulna articulation was observed. The synovial liquid was drained and sent to the laboratory for synovial cytology with Rosenfeld staining that revealed predominantly degenerated neutrophils with karyolytic chromatin associated with intracellular inclusions suggestive of Hepatozoon sp. gametocytes. The nasal mite Sternostoma tracheacolum Lawrence has caused significant respiratory issues, including serious injuries that possibly cause death of the host. In this study, we report two cases of captive birds parasitized by S. tracheacolum. The first case is a histopathological description of S. tracheacolum parasitizing the Gouldian Finch (Chloebia gouldiae) in the southeast region of Brazil, that showed partially or totally absence of the characteristic respiratory epithelium in trachea lumen. The other describes, for the first time, the parasitism of this species in a canary (Serinus canaria) in the northeast region of the country.

After 60 days, fleas were detected on animals and identified as Ctenocephalides felis felis. Elimination of the infestation was difficult. Animal treatment with a fipronil-based compound was effective, and subsequently captured animals were treated prophylactically. Some animals remained infested, and some died from the infestation.
The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) and the collared anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla) ar... more The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) and the collared anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla) are widespread in Brazil and found in all Brazilian biomes. These hosts frequently use domestic animal environments such as pastures, where tick and related microorganism interchange may occur between hosts. Reports of tick infestations of these animals are scattered and refer to small samples and/or are geographically restricted. We herein present data on a wide geographic distribution of ticks and their Rickettsia collected from 72 giant and 30 collared anteaters, mostly road killed, over a period of 18 years, from Southeast and Central-West Brazil encompassing four States and 46 Municipalities. Overall nine tick species (Amblyomma auricularium, A. calcaratum, A. nodosum, A. ovale, A. parvum, A. sculptum, A. triste, Rhipicephalus microplus and R. sanguineus sensu lato) were collected from anteaters. Amblyomma sculptum, A. nodosum, and A. calcaratum were the most prevalent corresponding to, respectively, 48.8%, 39.3% and 2.7% of all ticks (n = 1775). However, A. nodosum tick numbers on collared anteaters were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than those on giant anteaters. At the same time, an abundance of A. sculptum adults on giant anteaters was significantly higher (Z = 2.875; P = 0.004) than that of A. nodosum and only eight A. sculptum nymphs were found on collared anteaters. DNA samples from 20 ticks from nine different animals yielded a visible amplicon in PCR targeting gltA. The PCR products targeting spotted-fever Rickettsia gene (ompA) from five adults of A. nodosum were sequenced and were shown to be 100% identical to Rickettsia parkeri strain NOD (MF737635.1). The product of one nymph and one adult of A. sculptum yielded a sequence 99% identical to R. parkeri strain NOD. Further, Rickettsia bellii genes were found in three A. nodosum adults. Ecological, behavioral and anatomical traits of anteaters are discussed to explain reported tick infestations and Rickettsia DNA found.

No evolutionary form of haemosporidians or hemogregarines were observed in the blood smears of 83 samples, and there were no meronts in the histological sections of 31 necropsied samples. All DNA samples extracted from tissues and blood aliquots were negative in haemosporidian PCR assays (based on the mitochondrial cytochrome gene) and hemogregarine PCR assays (based on the 18S rRNA gene). In the analysis of blood smears of all seven evaluated, gametocytes of hemogregarines were observed. The seven were negative in the haemosporidian PCR assays. This report presents a description of natural infection of an adult free-living guira cuckoo with... more This report presents a description of natural infection of an adult free-living guira cuckoo with Paratanaisia confusa. Histological and morphological evaluations of renal and parasite samples were performed. The morphological analysis of the parasites revealed spiny tegument, characteristic of P. confusa helminthes. Although macroscopic alterations were absent in the kidneys, the histopathology revealed parasites inside the collecting ducts causing dilatation and destruction of the lining epithelial cells in addition to small focal inflammatory infiltrates in the renal parenchyma. However, as the bird was free-living and naturally infected it was not possible to confirm if all these alterations were directly caused by the parasite presence or if they were related to causes other than the parasitism. Nonetheless, such findings indicate that these trematodes may have pathogenic potential in this host.

Um espécime de cachorro-do-mato (Cerdocyon thous) de vida livre, macho, com 45 dias de vida foi capturado e encaminhado aos Serviços de Medicina de Animais Selvagens e de Oftalmologia do Hospital Veterinário “Governador Laudo Natel” da Universidade Estadual Paulista – Unesp, Câmpus Jaboticabal-SP, Brasil, onde recebeu atendimento primário ambulatorial. O paciente apresentava-se em bom estado geral, sem alterações hematológicas e sorológicas, e não havia sinais de déficit visual. A oftalmoscopia binocular indireta mostrou alterações retinianas no olho esquerdo, distribuídas na área tapetal na forma de pregas e de rosetas de coloração acinzentada.
