ABSTRACT: During the 18th century the nobility in Extremadura is deciding which option to take: on the one hand, whether to live peacefully on its rents and enjoy its privileges in its lands; or whether to place themselves at the service of the king in the management of the state, the army or the church in order to justify their enviable position in front of the society of that time. In this presentation we analyze some of the ways of nobility ambition: its joining to the Royal Seminary of Noblemen in Madrid, its entrance in the Orden of Carlos III and its promotion to titled nobility.

ABSTRACT The article describes the changes that occurred between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century in the Spanish prison policy, using as an example the conversion of the royal prison of Merida in jail judicial district, with the subsequent search of new housing facilities and some funding sources to include all the nearby villages and allow the maintenance of the poor prisoners, salaries and running costs of the building. Also, the extent allowed by local sources, a study of prisoners and the most common in late Elizabethan reign criminal types is performed.

ABSTRACT. This paper aims to defend the use of contemporary sources, both literary and journalistic, to approach the social issue of delinquence and punishment in the city of Badajoz. Therefore, we will refer to two very different sources. The first one is a pretty interesting diary written by a priest of the Badajoz cathedral, Leonardo Hernández Tolosa, in the second half of the XVIIIth century. This diary, well-known by the historians as the Libro de noticias , gathers a lot of local events, specilly those regarding public executions. The second one is the chronicle of current events of the Badajoz newspaper, El Avisador, published in the final years of Isabel II's reign.
