However, its timing, whereabouts, and the actual experience of this concluding life event remain largely unknown. While a person may be surrounded by other people when lying on her or his deathbed, death itself stays an individual experience that, once completed, does not allow the deceased to convey any knowledge about it with the bereaved. Simultaneously, internet and communication technologies play an increasingly important role in re-creating and distributing knowledge. While research on social media and death has focused on the impact of such fora on the bereaved, this study elicits their potential for those suffering from a terminal illness. Following a sociology of knowledge approach to discourse, final Facebook posts are analyzed and their significance as a new ritual of farewell is discussed. The results point to the high degree of agency that dying individuals practice on social media for staging their final bow out, thus also impacting the existent societal discourse on dying and death.

Trump has accused political opponents of both devilry and moral degradation, but such accusations have gone both ways. In her examination of German media coverage of Trump, Katharina Gallant shows how Trump has been portrayed as politically and morally inadequate. Bringing together Cohen’s traditional framework with Paul Joosse’s work on charismatic leadership, this chapter illuminates how Trump has emerged as a devil figure for the left wing in Europe, while similarly being someone that the European left-wingers have had few options for dealing with.

This paper examines whether there is a stereotype of a “good refugee” who is welcome to the EU as it studies the coverage of Syrian and Ukrainian refugees by a major German daily newspaper from a sociology of knowledge approach. As racist and sexist prejudices prevail, the media clearly favors Caucasian, non-Muslim women accompanied by young children as the “good” refugee who is welcome.

His position enables him to define a norm anew and thus question not only the existing set of rules of discourse but also the traditional structure of society. Based on these observations and following Foucault’s (Die Ordnung des Diskurses: Inauguralvorlesung am College de France, 2. Dezember 1970 (W. Seitter, Trans.). In: Foucault M, Die Ordnung des Diskurses (10, aumented edition with an essay by Ralf Konersmann). For this purpose, 1273 speeches, interviews, and press conferences which Morales gave between 2006 and 2016 were triangulated with data from ethnological field research and critical literature on th...
