Plaster sculptures and reliefs were not considered to be of great value, which is why not many studies of older date existed. Only in last decade more attention was given to the surface cleaning of plaster objects with Agar and Agarose, which is why this field still offers a place for research, exploration and innovative approach.
The thesis consists of two parts. The first part covers an introduction to plaster as a sculpturing material, with an overview of different ways of plaster casting, most common filler materials and surface coatings used on plaster objects.
Following in the second part is the presentation of author Frančišek Smerdu, whose plaster sculpture Ležeča z vencem I restored for the purpose of this thesis; the description of artwork states the entire process from when it first came to the studio, until the procedures executed on the sculpture. Every procedure (surface cleaning, puttying, the attachment of broken or chipped parts of the sculpture and the final retouching) is precisely documented. Described are the executed tests with the list of pros and cons for every tested material and method. The procedures and mixtures that proved to be the most suitable and were applied in the process are precisely presented and explained.
The supplement consists of a form for the condition report that I composed together with my colleague Matic Nosan. Under the form is the instruction on how it should be filled out. At the very end is attached the completed form for Ležeča z vencem.
