The article addresses this question in the context of the German-speaking 18th century and through Johann Joachim Winckelmann’s engagement with antiquity. To do so, it first draws on theories from Global Epistemologies by Philippe Descola (on the nature-culture divide) and Boaventura de Sousa Santos (especially the ›epistemicide‹) toestablish a theoretical framework for speaking about a ›colonization of the past‹. The article then examines Winckelmann’s construction of a colonial antiquity in his letters and in the History of Art in Antiquity. The rhetoric and metaphors of the letters reveal the idea of an antiquity that can be colonized and that is designed as an ›untouched field‹ or capturable territory. Similarly, in the History of Art, this corresponds to the structuring of the past and the construction of history through epistemicides, which expel the ›other‹ from the colonial space of antiquity.

On the one hand, an epistemological openness is emerging, as imagination, intended to supplement the unavailable, becomes the defining instance of the powerful modern subject. On the other hand, however, this correlates with an epistemological closure, insofar as the modernization of the subject becomes possible only through the exclusion of the 'other', removing colonial subjects and collectives from the imaginary. Thus, the history of the body, and that of the naked body in particular, becomes the field in which the discourse of modernity and the colonial entanglements of Europe can be mapped onto each other.

According to tradition, nudity stimulates the imagination and is the imaginary origin of art. The article examines this narrative in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and in the eighteenth century in Rousseau, the Encyclopédie, and Winckelmann, in order to show its poetic productivity, but also its colonial entanglements.

Thus, the edited volume does not offer a comprehensive study of ‘important’ empirical events, theoretical conceptualizations of the event, or of different literary forms of narrating event(s). Instead, this book gathers contributions that allow events to unfold in writing practices. The edited volume serves as a laboratory that permits contributors to experiment with not yet fully fledged ideas, risking uncertain outcomes, and encouraging authors both to do what they want to do and to explore how they want to do it. Therefore, the chapters work as sketches that are meant to intrigue the readers and not to convince them systematically. Some of these contributions are to be understood as practices, such as auto-theory, creative writing, or essays, while others represent a collaborative writing experiment, and, in this sense, an event in themselves. These explicitly creative approaches are complemented by theoretical perspectives that engage with conceptual inquiries involving, among others, Derrida and Deleuze, or explore the notion of the event within cultural products, film, and literature. The volume aligns with contemporary trends in embracing epistemological pluralism within academia, since the book brings together different ways of knowing in order to gain new perspectives on objects, questions, and methods, going beyond the strict framework of scientific objectivity. By doing so, the volume positions itself as a contribution to a relevant academia, capable of bridging the gap between specialized discourse and the intellectual public sphere.

In this talk we present some preliminary reflections on a project about the decolonization of Classics / Altertumswissenschaften and, in a broader sense, of the knowledge of antiquity. We start by looking into a series of articles that have been published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) between November 2020 and May 2021, most of which criticize decolonial efforts in Classics and German Altertumswissenschaften. The concept of global epistemologies, however, has rarely been taken into account with regard to antiquity and to productions of knowledge of antiquity [1]. As we would like to argue, it holds important new impulses and opens up new dimensions of its decolonialization, which is why – in a second step – we draw on theories by Boaventura de Sousa Santos [2] to explore how new forms of knowledge production, global dialogue as well as tools, methods and perspectives for decolonial approaches to antiquity and to the reception of antiquity could be developed.

This talk wants to examine the relationship between nudity and imagination and show how within a culture of clothing the desire to glimpse the naked body under textiles is designed as a primal scene of the aesthetic.
In the first part, theoretical approaches to nakedness are developed based on various cultural theories (including Freud and Descola) that focus on nakedness as a figuration of 'nature' and reconstruct the extent to which this naked nature is thereby juxtaposed with a clothed culture.
The second part traces these theoretical correlations through selected examples from the literary and cultural history of the naked body: first with Ovid in the ancient myth, where the opposition of nakedness and imagination is already laid out, and then with a view to the 18th century and Johann Joachim Winckelmann in particular. In Winckelmann's texts (Gedanken über die Nachahmung; Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums) two different conceptions of nudity are revealed, which in the opposition of nature and art emphasize the dichotomy of nature and culture.
