Her impressions were published at the time in the newspaper Última Hora and later gathered in the book Passporte para a China (2011). This article analyzes Lygia's impressions about China based on her contact with two women in the Maoist regime. The work also examines how her chronicles dialog with the tradition of the travel narrative, specifically in relation to reports about the East. As a result, the article present aspects related to the constitution of a chronicler’s identity and at the same time unveil tensions in gender and class relations in Maoist China. Moreover, based on the Chinese case, the chronicles enable Brazilian readers to formulate new perspectives regarding gender issues in their own country.

Therefore, it pays attention to the visual quality of Pessanha’s poetry and how he read, translated, and incorporated aspects of Chinese poetry into his verses. It also promotes a dialogue between the Coimbra poet and the Chinese poetic tradition, highlighting important figures from various periods. Furthermore, it demonstrates how Camilo Pessanha was a pioneer in using themes from Oriental poetry in his writing, anticipating elements of Imagism. Thus, the article reveals Pessanha, alongside Ezra Pound, as a precursor to incorporating the aesthetics of ideograms into Western literature. Additionally, it comments on the poet’s translating activity, which operates through the hospitality of language, as stated by Derrida, and in a vampiric manner by using difference to his advantage and incorporating it into his artistic practice. Finally, the objective is to demonstrate how the learning and translation of ideograms nourished Camilo Pessanha’s poetics and constitute a central aspect of both his ethics and aesthetics.

We also explore how fiction is presented as a form of bioprospective speculation, allowing readers to reconsider their animal condition and dismantle the speciesism built into Western thought. Based on the analysis, we will argue that the zoo can actually be read as a metaphor for life since, in both texts, there is social control through power relations and inversion between animals and humans through the gaze, that is, through empathy.

This article focuses on a phenomenological reading of the mentioned book and provides a brief analysis of other works by the author in search of the "forms of God" present in her extensive poetry. Starting from verses that express self-recognition and self-ignorance, the images that build worlds and dissolve into foam, snow, clouds, mist, or nothingness are analyzed in Canções, giving poetic form to the challenging endeavor of navigating the labyrinth of one's own mind. This process leads to the encounter with a hidden God. Phenomenology is used as support, both in accordance with the concepts developed by Edmund Husserl and in the Indian philosophical traditions, such as the Yoga Sutra (by Patanjali), and Zen Buddhism.

Due to the poet's proximity to China and his knowledge of Eastern art, politics, and philosophies, the intention was to compare the treatment of certain themes in his poetry (such as time and the dissolution of matter) with their treatment in a specific Eastern tradition, both poetic (by poets openly aligned with Taoism and Buddhism) and philosophical-religious. It is based on the assumption that in the East, philosophical and religious texts are also poetic creations, which makes the present comparison fruitful.

It describes his conceptions of poetry, self-criticism, and connections with other authors of the time. The article also includes a critical review of how Pessanha has been approached over the centuries based on his relationship with Symbolism. Drawing on some of the poet's compositions, the aim is to problematize his classification as a narrow symbolist, drawing attention to other aspects of his writing that relate to themes common in Portuguese literature prior to Symbolism and that connect to Eastern themes that the poet became acquainted with during his time in the East. Finally, the importance of considering other relationships that Pessanha may have established beyond Symbolism is noted, expanding the relevance of his poetic contribution and redefining the connections within his work.

To aid in the investigation, Viktor Shklovsky's studies (1976) and Carlo Guinzburg's work (2001) on estrangement were used, along with some notions expressed in Guimarães Rosa's letters and interviews where the writer discusses his creative process. Additionally, to further explore the themes of meditation and self-knowledge in "Primeiras estórias," references from the Buddhist canon were utilized since sutras and koans are ancient examples of using estrangement to capture the listener's or reader's attention and induce meditation on a given topic. The results demonstrate that the use of estrangement is effective as a means of meditative provocation, and meditation is indeed relevant to the process of composition and reception of Guimarães Rosa's work.

It discusses the similarities in their personalities and their connection to thematic and poetic forms originating from some Eastern traditions. A reexamination of the Portuguese tradition of the myth of the East is elaborated, observing how the poets in question relate to this theme. The central axis of the thesis is an attempt to elucidate how some of the verses and poems of Pessanha and Meireles give poetic form to the difficult endeavor of navigating the labyrinths of one's own mind. To accomplish this, phenomenology is employed, drawing upon concepts developed by Edmund Husserl and finding their counterparts in Indian thought. Texts from the Sanskrit tradition are then used as a foundation, such as the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali and various Buddhist Sutras, particularly from Chan (Zen) Buddhism. The books Clepsydra, by Camilo Pessanha, as conceived in its first publication in 1920, and Canções, 1956, by Cecília Meireles, are placed as central to the study. From the poems in these books, space is opened for further compositions by both authors, and the presence of the metaphors of the unspeakable in their verses is analyzed.

The first two were analyzed in their entirety, while in the latter, only the poem "Mar absoluto" was closely examined. These books represent the initial three volumes of the author's mature phase, displaying consistency and thematic cohesion that allow for comparisons between them. The approach employed in this study is rooted in Perennial Philosophy, thereby fostering a dialogue with diverse cultures and peoples, seeking to embrace Cecília Meireles' extensive knowledge of the world. The objective of this research is to demonstrate how the sea, as depicted in Cecília Meireles' poetry, is poetically transformed into a symbol of the Absolute.

Due to the poet's proximity with China and his knowledge about Eastern philosophies and arts, this paper aims to compare the approach of certain themes of his poetry (such as time and matter dissolution) to the manner these aspects were treated in some Eastern traditions, poetically (by Taoists and Buddhists poets), philosophically and religiously. This approach becomes profitable once it starts from the fact that in the East the philosophical and religious texts are also poetical creations.

It is intended to show how these publications are inserted in an important text corpus which covers a previous poetic phase, from 1927 to 1935, before the publication of Viagem (1939). These texts unveil a process of maturity on the part of the poet in relation to the aesthetic and thematic of her first published works. Thus, it is intended to demonstrate that in the selected texts, each in a distinct form, Cecília Meireles handled differently the mystical theme, which happens to be addressed more intensely in the future. One of the few women’s voices among the spiritualist group, the texts published by the poet lay a space for the representation of women in a context not much exploited by Brazilian literature: the spiritual ascension.

From her curiosity about the other and herself, a work of strong reflective content was born, dealing with the depths of the human condition and seeking to transcend death through the encounter with the eternal. The Perennial Philosophy serves as the basis for the analyses carried out in this dissertation. The intention was to demonstrate how the symbols chosen by the author shape a poetics of the eternal and ephemeral, of ego dissolution, of renunciation in the search for the Absolute, and of the balance between truth and illusion. Some of Cecília Meireles' cultural, philosophical, and religious interests (such as Eastern philosophies) and the dialogue with Symbolism were revisited in this dissertation in order to assist in the analysis of her early works in "Festa," "Baladas para El-rei," "Nunca Mais...," and "Poema dos Poemas," as well as her early mature books: "Viagem," "Vaga Música," "Mar Absoluto e Outros Poemas." The importance of the sea as a theme and symbol of the Absolute was analyzed, as well as the types of poetic voices that reaffirm this quest and other motifs that, through their repetition, also assume the status of symbols, such as hands, mirrors, portraits, and statues, directly connected to the concerns of the Perennial Philosophy. Therefore, the sea as a symbol of the Absolute and maritime themes are the strongest elements in this poetry produced between 1939 and 1945, and they persist throughout her body of work.
Key-words: Cecília Meireles. Perennial Philosophy. Symbols of the Absolute.

Is our literary horizon limited to Macondo? Or can we venture beyond, exploring paths forged by those who, between lunch and afternoon tea, left their mark on the pages of history? Seeking to unravel these questions, this volume presents a series of studies that focus on the intricate web of interactions between Latin American women writers throughout the 20th century and in contemporary times. Taking as a starting point the relationships established by authors such as Cecília Meireles, this book delves into the works of emblematic figures such as Delmira Agustini, Silvina Ocampo, and Victoria Ocampo. It also reflects on the problematization of identities in the so-called new boom of Latin American literature, culminating in a discussion of the contributions emanating from the pages of the magazine Puñado.

Keywords: war chronicles; Rubem Braga; Joel Silveira.
