Dr.Mrs Gloria Eme Worugji is an accomplished woman and mother, who joined the services of the University of Calabar in the year 2004 as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of English and Literary Studies. She rose through the ranks and earned her promotion to the rank of Associate Professor. She had her first degree- B. A. (Hons), in Theatre Arts from the University of Port-Harcourt in 1990. Her other degrees: MPA (1994), M.A. (1998) and Ph.D (2008), were awarded to her by the University of Calabar. Dr Worugji is also a holder of a Post Graduate Diploma in Education Certificate from the University of Calabar in 2019. She was awarded Full Sports Color Award by the University of Port-Harcourt Management during her first-degree convocation in recognition of the Silver Medal that she won to the University during the Nigerian Universities' Games in 1996. Since joining the University, she has been teaching, mentoring, guiding and researching in the University thereby contributing to the graduation of students in the University. Dr Gloria Worugji has successfully published over fourty journal articles in both local and foreign peer-reviewed reputable journals. She participated in several local and international conferences where she presented papers and make useful contributions. Dr Worugji belongs to many learned societies including Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists, National Association of Nigerian, African Literary Association, National Association of Theatre Arts Practitioners, Association of Nigerian Authors, Researchers' International Network and Reading Association of Nigeria. In this paper, an effort is made to read two paradigmatic modern English novels with the framewor... more In this paper, an effort is made to read two paradigmatic modern English novels with the framework of sociological theory. This is with a view to deconstructing the erroneous claim that the modern novel and sociological theory are strange bedfellows. Thus, two canonical modern novels, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, are used as textual exemplifications. Both texts are subjected to sociological scrutiny by isolating the nexus between the respective stories and the modern world that they depict. In the main, it is critically argued that the two novels reflect and refract the mood and vices of the modern world. It is also established that the selected novels are not mere socio-political comments; rather, they imaginatively chronicle the socio-political impasse in the modern world and the impact of industrialization on the traditional way of life. The novels also depict the unfortunate negative effects of the growth of commercialization in the modern world. It is concluded that the two novelists have looked at the ugly face of much of the modern world, without flinching but with frankness and satirical underpinnings. This paper discusses the various levels of literacy the women in Elechi Amadi’s Estrangement acqu... more This paper discusses the various levels of literacy the women in Elechi Amadi’s Estrangement acquired through and after the war in their quest for escape from the patriarchal claws. It highlights the exploitations of the women at war front and at the same time how they are empowered through education in socio-economic relations in the society. Even though it is a fictional work, the experience of these women during the war is not different from what other women in similar situation at other parts of the world experienced. This paper is of the opinion that women being the largest groups in the society, women literacy should be encouraged as it will go a long way to helping the society grow socially and otherwise. Government should continue in its campaign for female literacy through the Nigerian first ladies and their teams to ensure the Nigerian women are not left out of this global pursuit for developing women through literacy.

According to Mba (2009, p.322), “emancipation of females is one of the greatest achievements of the women’s struggle globally”. As a continent, African culture accords a superior status to the male such that strength, freedom, independence, honour, courage and other positive attributes are ascribed to the male gender, while attributes of weakness, fear, dependence among others are ascribed to the female gender. Crimes of less magnitude are considered as “female” crimes and attract less stiff punishment.
