In their commentaries on Virgil’s poems Servius and Servius Auctus often mention Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides and at times they allude to theatrical elements typical of the Greek tragedies. The present paper scrutinizes how deep was the commentators’ knowledge of the tragic genre and whether this knowledge was an instrument to explain Virgil’s poetry or was referred to just out of curiosity

Such references were probably traditional: it was well-known that Virgil had drawn inspiration from the Greek poetry and consequently the scholiast thought it necessary to record and hand down the allusions. Generally, the references are intended to explain the text of Virgil single words, whole lines and passages, imagery or to compare the Greek model with the Virgilian rewriting. They are often imprecise and at times even erroneous. Hence, the scholiasts knowledge of Greek poetry seems limited and probably derived from mythological handbooks and previous commentaries on Virgils poems. Though often mentioned, the Greek poets are considered only as models for Virgil and they dont raise any curiosity regarding their lives or their works. The real interest of Servius, in the end, is just to explain Bucolics, Georgics and Aeneid.

Servius's exegetical work and an extended part of Macrobius's Saturnalia cover the same subject: Vergil and his poems. However, the different structures of the two works entail different treatments and approaches to the same subject. The present paper will take in exam the comments on two passages from the Aeneid and one from the Georgics in order to show similarities and dissimilarities between Servius and Macrobius's art of commenting.
