N. Blondeau
Nicolas Blondeau, PhD is presently senior researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS/Univ of Nice, France). His interests are novel strategies, which include brain preconditioning and nutrition to protect the brain from ischemic stroke. His research demonstrated that the TREK-1 K+ channel mediates omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid-induced protection against stroke and vasodilation of cerebral arteries. He pursued his research on omega-3 protection by demonstrating that alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, the first member of the omega-3 family) triggers neuroplasticity, neurotrophin expression and displays anti-depressant-like effects. His interest in omega-3 fatty acids and their pleiotropic properties including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects naturally led him toward the field of nutrition. In 2010, he identified a new preventive strategy by dietary supplementation of alpha-linolenic acid to protect from stroke published in Pharmacol. Res. Thus, N. Blondeau is a pioneer in the field of the nutraceutical value of omega-3 ALA against stroke and at the origin of the new concept that brain preconditioning may be achieved through supplementation of an essential nutrient – so-called nutraceutical in diet (see his 2013 book chapter, A New Future in Brain Preconditioning Based on Nutraceuticals: A Focus on a-Linolenic Omega-3 Fatty Acid for Stroke Protection, in Innate Tolerance in the CNS by Springer New York). N. Blondeau is an external expert for the E.U Commission and for the Italian Ministry for Education University and Research (MIUR). He served on numerous panels, including the editorial boards of Stroke, JCBFM, Frontiers and Pharmanutrition. He is also a Member of the ISCBFM Board of Directors and appointed lecturer of European M.S. in Translational Neuroscience of the London School of Medicine.
