The cult of the Magi acquired great popularity from the 12th century, thanks also to the transfer of their relics from Milan to Cologne by the will of Federico Barbarossa. Symbolic figures with a complex interpretation, the Magi had great importance in the liturgical dramatizations that accompanied Christmas. In particular they were celebrated on the 6th January, the day they arrived in Bethlehem, completing that journey (the terrible 12 days) in which both time and space had dissolved and, thanks to the epiphany of Christ, could be then founded again. It is no coincidence that on that night of rebirth of the chronological cycle was also announced the date on which Easter and other festivities would fall.

The words 'holiness' and 'hagiography' refer to different semantic fields: the first to that of personal experience, the second to that of the representation of the experience. In the context of Christianity, the fundamental features of hagiography were already defined in the early centuries. Indeed, many narrative elements of the new faith, derived from the literary tradition of the classical world, contributed to the defining of its literary models. Sanctity is based on the institution capable of 'sanctioning' it, and it is encoded through the hagiographic story which is developed in parallel with the institutions capable of authenticating its representation. Holiness 'represented' through hagiographic elaboration therefore constitutes an important key to interpreting historical processes but due to its nature it demands constant from the researcher, who needs to distinguish the object of the narration (saint) from the narrator (hagiographer).

During the Middle Ages Florence experienced a significant development of female religiosity. The newly developed urban context offered to women who could or did not want to live with their family but neither wished to access the monastic statute, different opportunities compared to the ancient monasticism. Several new forms of female religious communities, supported by the financial aid offered by the mercantile society, arose in the city. These offered a diversity of solutions even to the most marginal segments of the population. The blossoming of these new communities had significant repercussions on the urban structure of the city whose surroundings became populated by small communities of women who followed the hagiographic model offered by the Mendicant Orders.

This essay focuses on the influence of the Franciscan Observance in the formal and symbolic building abroad of the holy places that witnesses to the Passion of Christ. The article analyses how the Observance progressively substituted the Conventuals in the spiritual and physical geography of the Order, in particular in the Holy Land, where in the second half of the fifteenth century the friars were direct witnesses of the Turkish-Christian clash. This essay will show how they developed a sort of 'loss syndrome’ of the holy places whose 'custody' was felt as the main objective of the Franciscan heritage.

The epic tale and the hagiographic legend are the narrative genres that best illustrate the idea that a complementarity exists between the natural and supernatural spheres; in this perspective the landscape, but generally space and time beyond ordinary sensoriality, are filled with cratophane potential. This essay analyzes the human perception of forests and uninhabited places, the numinous nature of the animal world, the anthropic order and natural disorder. This work focuses in particular on the ambiguity of water and on the figures called to protect its salubrity, as opposed to the monsters, symbols of natural chaos, such as the dragon.

The composite sediment of the hagiographic tradition, in its different narrative morphologies (liturgical, iconographic, monumental, ritual) profoundly influenced the development of the city’s image and self-awareness. The hagiographic tradition contributed in a decisive way to defining both municipal time and space. This is particularly evident from the study of the chronicles of the municipal age which, starting from the fourteenth century, revived local history while reinterpreting and appropriating the monumental vestiges of the past. This article analyzes the role played by sacred tradition and its sources in legitimizing urban antiquities. The work focuses on the case of Florence and on the use that the chronicler Giovanni Villani makes of the city's hagiographic memory.

The cult of Mary in Florence expanded significantly at the beginning of the thirteenth century, and in particular between 1230 and 1235, that is, during the war between Florence and Siena. The Virgin provided a religious facade to the laic aspirations of the Florentine middle classes, providing them with an instrument of mobilisation and ideological consensus. This phenomenon is evident from the progressive diffusion, in the cities of central and northern Italy, of Societies of the Virgin. It was the new religious orders legitimized by the IV Lateran council that had a predominant influence in the dissemination of the cult of Mary. In fact these orders, with a strong pauperistic and evangelical tradition, substantially conditioned the type of evangelical proposal offered to the laity.

The production of devotional books for domestic usein vernacular language is the most significant indicator of the progressive spread of religious knowledge. This was no longer exclusively administered by the church but was open to the study of the most cultured lay people. The essay analyses this phenomenon through the activity of a notary, ser Baldovino di Domenico di Baldovino from Florence. Baldovino worked among the relatives and collaborators of Saint Anthonin and is famous for having drawn up one of the most important biographies of him. He is also the author of an unfinished religious treatise accompanied by short legends of saints, of which the one relating to Verdiana da Castelfiorentino is published here in the appendix (Florence, Biblioteca Riccardiana 1563, Vita di santa Verdiana, ff.149r-151v, second half of the 15th century .)

This work will analyse the historical context in which fist appeared the division, both semantic and juridical, of the various architectural elements of the cathedral. The creation of his story is linked to the reorganisation of the diocese of Fiesole, which was initiated in the eleventh century by bishop Iacopo il Bavaro. Esso costituisce un commento ai saggi di due autori chiamati a confrontare le diverse morfologie religiose dell’area fiamminga e italiana rispettivamente proposte da Walter Simons (God as a good citizen. On the place of religion in medieval Flemish cities) e da Cécile Caby (Religione cittadina, religione civica nell’Italia medievale »).
This essay is published in the proceedings of a seminar held in January 2006 and aims to compare different aspects of medieval reality in Italian and Flemish cities. This article comments on Walter Simon’s ‘God as a good citizen. On the place of religion in medieval Flemish cities’ and on Cécile Caby’s ‘Religion town, civic religion in medieval Italy’. The essay first highlights the different cultural and economical relationship that existed between city and countryside. It then analyses the relationship between centre and periphery, focusing especially on the different territorial organization of the church, on the role of bishops and of the clergy. Finally this essay shows the role of the mendicant orders, demonstrating how historiography has overestimated their importance.

This article investigates the influence of Arnolfo di Cambio in changing the name of the cathedral of Florence from Santa Reparata to Santa Maria del Fiore. This work will analyse the historical context in which fist appeared the division, both semantic and juridical, of the various architectural elements of the cathedral. The essay analyses the factitious hagiographic case of St. Romulus, the legendary bishop and martyr.

The ecclesiastical story of the two urban centers is intertwined in a relationship of reciprocity and confrontation that will reach the height of conflict in the twelfth century.

The essay investigates the cultural roots and the hagiographic use of the dragon, focusing in particular on the theme of the killing of dragons in the Italian hagiographic tradition. Particular attention is paid to the transfer of this symbol from the semantics of imperial power - Constantinian in particular - to the pontifical one, through the attribution of a ‘sauromachy’ to Pope Sylvester. The article then focuses on the Italian saints slayers of dragons and the progressive overlap of that topos from folkloric uses to liturgical tradition.
The devotion to the Virgin Mary, spread in Tuscany by the mendicant orders in the thirteenth century, experienced a new fortune between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. New miraculous images appeared in small towns and rural areas and were added to the many venerated pictures of the Virgin in the major cities. The popular demand for theophanies and wonders justified the creation of new sanctuaries which also had the purpose to polarize on Mary archaic religious customsvand beliefs (such as the cults for the therapeutic waters associated with fertility) still widespread in the countryside.

This essay focuses on the influence of the Franciscan Observance in the formal and symbolic building abroad of the holy places that witnesses to the Passion of Christ.
The essay reconstructs the biographical and hagiographic story of Verdiana from Castelfiorentino, analyzing the civic aspects of her cult and the identity function it assumed between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern age. The essay also examines Verdiana's cult fortune in Florence, demonstrating how it spread over the territories controlled by the city.
The essay outlines the characteristics of the postmodern crisis of the historical narrative, identifying the reason for this loss of authority in the deconstructionist critique. This work also exemplifies some of the possibilities offered to the studies on the Middle Ages by digital communication and social media.
It will be shown how St. John the Baptist, Santa Reparata and St. Zanobi constituted the patronal trio of the Florentine bishopric and church, and how the Marian 'synthesis' initiated in the thirteenth century replaced the ancient intercessors of the Florentine church.
The essay analyses the factitious hagiographic case of St. Romulus, the legendary bishop and martyr. The creation of his story is linked to the reorganisation of the diocese of Fiesole, which was initiated in the eleventh century by bishop Iacopo il Bavaro. This essay demonstrates that the ambiguous figure of the saint should be interpreted in reference to the history of the city and in particular in reference to its competition with Florence.
The essay describes the medieval vicissitudes of the diocese of Fiesole and of its bishops with the neighboring Florence, suggesting that the latter developed to the detriment of the Fiesole one. The ecclesiastical story of the two urban centers is intertwined in a relationship of reciprocity and confrontation that will reach the height of conflict in the twelfth century.
The essay addresses the 'history' of Florentine worship for Saint Reparata proposing in appendix the Legend in use at the Cathedral: Liber passionis et ystoriae sanctae Reparate virginis , text of the fourteenth century preserved the Archives of the Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, ms. I.3.7 (cc. 1r-8v)
