Edmonds identifies in the protagonists of this comedy as representations of the politicians Epaminondas and Pelopidas. This study examines this hypothesis, never previously analysed in detail and almost ignored by the critics. Given the chronology of Eubolus, a contemporary of these politicians, an interpretation of the comic Antiope like that suggested by Edmonds, in which the politicians are to be identified with a pair of twins, would impose dating the literary construction of the “inseparable couple” to a period contemporary with the actions of Pelopidas and Epaminondas. This would lend support to the hypothesis that the image of the “inseparable couple” Pelopidas-Epaminondas started in the IV century as an artificial construction, for the purposes of Athenian propaganda.

This could justify and explain the existence of the anecdote contained in the biography of Thucidides attributed to Marcellinus, according to which Thucidides was a pupil of Anaxagoras. This detail, most probably improvised by the author seems to be based on some clear connections between the research method promoted by Thucidides and Anaxagoras investigation. While the general methodological framework which Thucidides uses for l’ἱστορίη demonstrates numerous links with Anaxagoras' philosophy, a more detailed analysis of the episodes where the historian reveals his scientific knowledge, in a strict sense, (eclipses, fires, tsunami) shows that the historian's knowledge base has a substantial Anaxagorean inheritance.

The essays collected in this volume have the scope of identifying, each from a precise point of view, how the traditions connected to epic, in Homer and in the poets of the epic cycle and in the oldest lyric poems, presented these zones, and to seeing how, from a concept of Hesperos the place of sunset, an extreme populated by monsters and creatures connected to the world of were considered the Hesperiai place of the Argonauts and of the founders of Euhesperides, l'Hiberia, la Keltiké.

The study demonstrates how the son of Sisyphus should beidentified in Glaucus, while the location of the event should beconsidered as Onchestus. This tradition seems to have arisen in the 7th century, or at the latest the beginning of the 6 th , in a context where Orchomenus had strong connections with the Argolic area. Placed in the context of a gymnastic competition, and caused by a Corinthian hero, the death of Clymenus also seems to enter into the set of pro-Argive and anti-Spartan traditions that are often testified in Epimenides. In fact, during the 7th century Corinth was the ally of Sparta against Argo and Pisa, and Glaucos is a Corinthian hero that, in Eumelos' account, is placed squarely in the Spartan tradition.
