Maria Laura Mastellone
Maria Laura Mastellone holds an engineering degree from the University Federico II (Naples-Italy) and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering obtained after a three-years research on Feedstock Recycling of Plastics by means of thermolysis processes partly developed at Harburg-Hamburg Engineering Faculty (Germany). Currently, she is associate professor at Second University of Naples in the scientific area of Chemical Plant Design. During her academic career she has been team leader of several research projects funded by public bodies (European Commission Framework Programme, Italian Ministry of Industry, Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, …) and private companies as Ansaldo and Unilever on several fields related to the environmental and processing engineering. A peculiar aspect of her research is the relevance of the experimentation as essential part of the research; the lab-scale and pilot plants utilized in more than 15 years of research activity have been always designed by Mrs. Mastellone in the role of chief process engineer. In the course of her research carrier she published more than 70 papers on international peer reviewed journals and conferences’ proceedings. The book entitled “Clean Energy from Waste” published by Nova Publishers (NY) in 2015 is the most recent and relevant publication on the sustainable waste management. In addition to the academic career, Mrs. Mastellone acts as advisor for public Authorities on several environmental aspects included the editing of the waste management plans of large territory (Messina province, Regione Campania); she also has been appointed as council member with environmental mandate for the Municipality and Province of Caserta. As recognized expert in technological issues related to environmental protection, waste treatment and chemical processing plants she is currently the technical advisor of Government of Campania region for the verification of industrial facilities operation license (e.g. exam of IPPC regulation compliance). Her professional skills in the environmental sector led to be chosen for preparing important projects as the “40,000t/y anaerobic facility” commissioned by the Government Commissioner as well as feasibility studies about pyrolysis and gasification facilities for hazardous and municipal waste and testing of industrial processing facilities - waste recycling (60,000t/y), hospital waste sterilization (3,000t/y) - by private Companies.
Professor Mastellone is also founder and Board Chairman of the spin-off academic company ATHENA born to transfer in the large scale the results obtained after 10-years applied research on gasification of plastics, biomass and other waste to obtain synthetic gas and, from this, feedstock, electric energy and heat.
