These strategies must decrease the number of fires, the burnt area and create better conditions for the firefighting. In this line of action, the Portuguese Institute of Nature and Forest Conservation defined a fire break network (FBN), which helps controlling wildfires. However, these fire breaks are efficient only if they are correctly maintained, which should be ensured by the local authorities and requires verification from the national authorities. This is a fastidious task since they have a large network of thousands of hectares to monitor over a full year. With the increasing quality and frequency of the Earth Observation Satellite imagery with Sentinel-2 and the definition of the FBN, a semi-automatic remote sensing methodology is proposed in this article for the detection of maintenance operations in a ...

Besides huge variety of data types, dynamics related to continuous data flow from multiple sources, handling enormous volumes of data is essential. This paper provides an overview of methods aimed at reducing both the number of features/attributes as well as data instances. It concentrates on data mining approaches not related to instruments and observation tools instead working on processed object-based data. The main goal of this article is to describe existing datasets on which algorithms are frequently tested, to characterize and classify available data reduction algorithms and identify promising solutions capable of addressing present and future challenges in astronomy.

Consistency of data plays an influential role in reassuring the quality of the integrated data. In this paper we discuss issues of data inconsistency in the domain of sunspot detection (i.e. a manifestation of solar activity). Sunspots data are collected from ground based observatories and also from instruments aboard satellites. Due to instrumentation limitations and inevitable subjectivity of human observers, the collected data bear some levels of inconsistency. This paper discusses issues regarding inconsistency in data used for performance validation of an automated sunspot tracking system. For evaluating the results, an integrated probability reference map is created, using knowledge integration, which reinforces data accuracy with higher certainty. Further, we use a weighted matching technique to reduce the impact of some data inconsistency.

To highlight important issues concerning communication with databases, we propose two taxonomies: the first taxonomy deals with flexible query languages in crisp relational databases and the second deals with flexible query languages in fuzzy relational databases. They can help database designers and users understand and select the best approaches to solve their problems.

Most MCDM methods implement normalization techniques to produce dimensionless data in order to aggregate/rank alternatives. Using different normalization techniques may lead to different rankings. So, selecting a more suitable normalization technique is a requirement in the decision process. Specially, by the advent of big data and its role in developing life’s quality, finding the best normalization technique in MCDM models are more challenging. Collecting data from sensors causes more complex decision problems, thus, providing accurate normalized values (in the same unit) is more critical in these types of contexts. In this research, we analyze and evaluate the effect of different normalization techniques on the ranking of alternatives in one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods called Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) using our developed assessment framework. An illustrative example (smart car parking) is used to discuss the suitability of the framework and recommend more proper normalization technique for AHP. Furthermore, the developing of technological innovation is expected by using the evaluation framework which can raise the accuracy of the normalized values in decision problems.

In this article the evolving IPSIS structure is discussed within past ESA financed projects, as well as their achieved Technology Readiness Level (TRL). To achieve a higher TRL, an IPSIS-Modified version is presented regarding its implementation in real-time and hardware-acceleration with the use of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for parallel processing in conjunction with the chosen board's processing system. This modified version, with some trimmed and added modules, modifications and optimizations is discussed and the computational effort between the past and current IPSIS versions is compared using the same dataset from a precursor project.

Our motivation for carrying out this work comes from the importance and the need of analysing and representing the EWG-DSS various relationships that academically link its current 104 members. With this project, we will be able to evaluate the group’s collaboration dynamics since its foundation in 1989, up to the present moment. As a by-product, we aim to encourage new research and promote further collaboration among the academic members of the group in common projects and jointpublications, since their current areas of research will be revisited and focused by this study. Another expected result of this work is to evaluate social informal relationships among the group members.

Usually, this type of problems includes two main tasks, rating the alternatives regarding each criterion and then ranking them. Once a decision is made (alternative selected) the problem is solved. However, for situations involving reaching consensus or requiring several steps before reaching a final decision, we must consider a dynamic and adaptable decision model, which considers previous solutions. In this work we introduce multiple criteria dynamic decision making models (MCDDM) and discuss contributions to deal with the difficult problem of imprecision in dynamically changing input data. To illustrate the approach, a simplified example of autonomous spacecraft landing is presented.

This paper discusses the Monitoring Tool of a Decision Support System that provides Flight Control Teams with useful Space Weather information (past, current and forecasted) to increase their ability to protect spacecraft components from hazardous events. The Monitoring Tool (MT) is a sub-module of the system's Monitoring and Diagnosis module. It provides real-time spacecraft data visualization, real-time spacecraft alarms and recovery suggestions inference, through real-time data loading. The Monitoring Tool, which is still under development, will also provide users with real-time graphical visualization of space weather parameters, user-defined alarms and events (e.g. solar flares, geomagnetic storms).
