Sanja Nikčević
SANJA NIKČEVIĆ (1960) is a theatre critic, theatre scholar and distinguished professor od Histroy of Theatre at The Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek, Croatia with two Fulbright scholarships (CUNY New York, UCSB Santa Barbara). Prior to university career she worked as a journalist in Croatian daily newspaper, theatre adviser in Ministry of culture and as a head of NGO (founder and first president of Croatian center of International Theatre Institute - ITI). She used to be the president of Croatian Association of Theatre Critics and Theatre Scholars (HDKKT) and adviser for the European Theatre Award. She is very active on international level where she published over hundred articles, essays and research papers.
She edited 6 anthologies: three concerning Croatian war plays, two American plays in Croatia and Anthology of Contemporary Croatian Drama in Macedonia.
She published 10 books. Three books dealing with American drama: “The Subversive American Drama or Sympathy for Losers” (1994); “Affirmative American Drama or Long Live the Puritans” (2003); “Losers' Genius in Our Town” (2006) and three on Croatian drama “What is Croatian drama to us?” (2008), “Different Picture or Beyond the Main Stream Theatre” (2016) and “Myth about Krleza or Worshipers and Haters in Media War” (polemic work dealing with open confrontations in Croatia cultural space about person and work of Miroslav Krleza, Croatian most recognized but also attacked writher). Two books on war topics: “How to Stage Human Sufferings. War Topics in Croatian, Bosnian and American drama” (2016) and “ Picture of Homeland War In Croatian Theatre 1990-2016 or From Sanctuary To Imposed Guilt” (2018).
Her book “New European Drama or Great Deception” (2005; 2009) caused a lot of reactions on international level, received awards in Croatia and was translated in Slovak, English (in New Theater Quarterly, August 2005), Hungarian, and Polish language. The book on theatre criticism “Theatre Criticism or Inevitable Companion” (2011), which for the first time offered definition of theatre criticism was also awarded in Croatia as best book of criticism in 2011.
She was awarded by decoration from President of Croatia for her international work, and by award Andrija Buvina for affirmation of Christian values.
Her main topics of interest are contemporary drama (Anglo-american and Craotian), history of theater, theatre criticism, war topic, affirmative and religious drama.
Last ten years she is preoccupied with relationship between worldview and theater, challenging current canon as imposed without immanent reasons. She advocates return of catharsis in theatre and our right to Beauty/Good/Sacred in Theatre. That is why she started new publishing house (Citadela libri) where she publish plays that affirms basic human values and theory that defines terms and gives some answer to the important human questions.

Poznata po svojim originalnim i provokativnim stavovima o hrvatskoj drami, Sanja Nikčević se i ovdje pokazuje pobornicom tzv. dramskog teatra. Posebnost je ovog rukopisa njegova polemična dimenzija posvećena vrlo oštrom sukobu u hrvatskom kulturnom prostoru oko lika i djela Miroslava Krleže. Autorica sukobljene strane imenuje krležodulima (oni koji smatraju da je Miroslav Krleža najveći pisac na svijetu, a da je bio zabranjen od 1990. i da mu nije poklonjeno dovoljno pažnje) i krležoklastima (koji smatraju da je Miroslav Krleža najveća nepogoda hrvatske književnosti koja je i dalje uništava) smatrajući da pravi krležo-fili tj. oni koji doista vole Miroslava Krležu zbog njegova vlastita djela, nikoga ne zanimaju.
