Lisa Sciortino è uno storico dell’arte formatosi all’Università degli Studi di Palermo dove ha conseguito nel 2004 la laurea in Lettere Moderne e nel 2010 il Dottorato di Ricerca in Storia dell’Arte Medievale, Moderna e Contemporanea in Sicilia. Studiosa di cultura artistica siciliana ed etnoantropologia, è stata per quattro anni Vicedirettore e per nove anni Direttore aggiunto del Museo Diocesano di Monreale. Ha pubblicato una serie di monografie dedicate all’arte siciliana principalmente arti decorative, pittura, scultura, architettura, tra cui vanno ricordati La cappella Roano nel Duomo di Monreale: un percorso di arte e fede (2006); Monreale: il Sacro e l’Arte. La committenza degli Arcivescovi ed Emilio Murdolo pittore (2011); Il Duomo di Monreale (2012); Il Museo Diocesano di Monreale (2016); La porcellana bianca della collezione Renda Pitti. Da qualche tempo maturavo l’idea di scrivere su Tommaso Sciortino, non soltanto per il naturale a... more Da qualche tempo maturavo l’idea di scrivere su Tommaso Sciortino, non soltanto per il naturale affetto che mi lega alla sua figura mite e amorevole di nonno, ma anche per il mestiere antico e ormai scomparso di carradore che lo ha contraddistinto, professione esercitata in una città, quella di Bagheria, che si potrebbe a buon diritto designare ‘patria’ del carretto siciliano e attestazione diretta dell’identità del popolo isolano. A 120 anni dalla sua nascita, ho ritenuto opportuno mettere nero su bianco i tratti salienti della lunga vita di Tommaso Sciortino, raccontare il suo lavoro e omaggiarlo con questa pubblicazione, supportata e incoraggiata dal figlio Domenico, mio padre. Il volumetto, scaturito dall’arricchimento conoscitivo di una inedita produzione manuale legata al territorio, è l’occasione per presentare al pubblico le immagini dei carrettini sopravvissuti al tempo, opera di un artigiano che ha sempre lavorato nella discrezione della propria bottega, senza esibizioni o propagande velleitarie, ad una tra le espressioni più alte della tradizione popolare locale. Professionale e meticoloso, dalle sapienti mani laboriose, Tommaso Sciortino rimase nostalgicamente legato a quel mondo magico d’inizio Novecento anche quando il carretto divenne mezzo obsoleto, soppiantato rapidamente dalla rumorosa, moderna e veloce motorizzazione. Questa pubblicazione è un ringraziamento personale a lui per avermi inconsapevolmente instillato l’amore per l’iconico mezzo ormai folclorico siciliano e un affettuoso omaggio che ho voluto porgere all’uomo e all’infaticabile lavoratore che ha saputo forgiare il legno lentamente, solco dopo solco, per donare ai posteri una testimonianza del patrimonio locale, della storia recente, facendo memoria delle nostre radici. Una bellezza da guardare e conservare. Chiudo citando Renato Guttuso che già nel 1954 scrisse del carretto “pochi sanno a che serve nella vita del popolo siciliano e quanto vale nella sua singolare espressione di arte popolare (…). Ecco perché è necessario uscire dalla curiosità per il folclore e studiare seriamente gli aspetti più genuini dell’espressione artistica popolare: per trarne nutrimento” (R. Omaggio a Santa Rosalia a 400 anni dal ritrovamento del corpo. di Lisa SCIORTINO È l'estate del 1624 quando a Palermo si impone il culto per Santa Rosalia e, nel 400° anniversario del ritrovamento delle sue spoglie mortali su Monte Pellegrino, è doveroso omaggiarla, tra le numerosissime manifestazioni locali, anche con questo breve saggio su alcuni esempi di iconografia della Santuzza palermitana nell'arte popolare siciliana. L'ultima ondata di peste nel capoluogo siciliano risaliva al 1575 ma, a distanza di quasi 50 anni, il morbo era tornato ad appestare la città giunto con un vascello proveniente dall'Africa. La convinzione popolare ritenne che il flagello fosse una punizione divina e per questo la soluzione avrebbe dovuto avere carattere religioso. Si invocarono Cristo, la Vergine, tutti i santi nonché le sante patrone della città e si moltiplicarono le processioni con una forte carica emotiva penitenziale popolare.

Il patrimonio artistico di uso profano, non solo isolano, è stato facile oggetto di dispersione legato sovente alle sorti economiche delle famiglie nobiliari ma anche al mutare dei gusti. I facoltosi borghesi non esitarono a fondere opere ritenute fuori moda al fine di realizzare nuovi manufatti più à la page, cancellando, di fatto, parte della storia della produzione artistica laica.

Avviato dal padre alla carriera ecclesiastica, frequentò per alcuni anni il Seminario cittadino dove conobbe Gioacchino Di Marzo che, riconoscendo in lui una propensione verso l'arte, lo avviò agli studi di disegno della Scuola tecnica serale di Disegno di istituzione comunale. Qui incontrò il pittore Enrico Cavallaro (1858-1895) con il quale collaborò nel 1891 alla decorazione dei foyer e dei corridoi del Teatro Politeama[2] e alla sala dei Gonfaloni a Palazzo delle Aquile a Palermo[3]. Nel 1894 fu nominato socio fondatore del Circolo Artistico del capoluogo siciliano del quale decorò le sale interne, ma presto, in aperta polemica con alcune scelte artistiche, se ne dissociò. Nello stesso anno partecipò con La loggia dell'Incoronazione alla I Esposizione della Società Promotrice Siciliana di Belle Arti di Palermo e, nel 1896, alla V con Donne della Kalsa e Vicolo palermitano (Fig. 1), della Civica Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palermo.

Mezzo a trazione equina in uso in Sicilia dal XIX secolo fino a metà del Novecento quando fu superato dalla crescente motorizzazione, il carretto è il risultato dell'assemblaggio di diverse varietà di legno intagliato, spesso anche scolpito e dipinto tanto da divenire simbolo folcloristico isolano.

La storia dei manufatti realizzati da religiosi, spesso suore o frati non meglio identificati, rinvia ad un mondo tramontato di devozione diffusa, di poche risorse ma di grande creatività.
