The in-depth analysis of the sources preserved in the State Archives of Venice and the comparison... more The in-depth analysis of the sources preserved in the State Archives of Venice and the comparison with the data that emerged from the numerous investigations carried out by technicians from various addresses in the preparatory work for the recent restoration of the Rialto Bridge, have helped broaden the knowledge of the wooden sub foundations and, in part, of the stone foundations, specifying several aspects that had remained obscure until now. The investigation has allowed us to resolve several questions about: the size and composition of both the bulkheads built to put the site in a dry place and the foundation piles; the number and essence of the wooden poles used; their measurements; the thickness of the raft above; the actual shape of the platforms, characterised by the much-disputed, stepped structure, designed by Antonio Da Ponte, on the equally-disputed, in shoe arrangement of the stones of the two supporting pillars put there by Da Ponte; the original solutions given to the issue of support and construction for the arch; and the differences between the piles made on both sides of the Grand Canal in connection with the differing nature of the land.
All this has enabled us to make corrections and additions to the construction plan of the bridge drawn by Luca Beltrami at the beginning of the twentieth century and to give due importance, as a product on the site, to one of the drawings contained in the archive, reviewing its attribution. The creation of a large registry of the documentation found and its comparison with the studies conducted even recently on the foundations of other buildings, have made some insights possible into the evolution of construction techniques in force in Venice, the market for timber in the city and on the mainland, as well as the use and import of Istrian stone and bricks.
