Eighteen such idioms found in literature as confirmed examples of calques from English have been included in the analysis, and they have been divided into subclasses based on their degree of desemantization. A corpus (<i>Hrvatska jezična riznica</i>) and the internet (<i>Google search engine</i>) were analyzed in order to obtain insight into the use of these idioms and their degree of desemantization. In instances of idiomatic use in Croatian, it is concluded that calques with an <i>adjective </i> + <i>noun</i> structure are idioms in the full sense of the word, and should as such be rightfully included in phraseological classifications.

These factors include, among others, age, context, familiarity and decomposability rate (the degree to which an idiom is susceptible to interpretation through simple analysis of the meanings of its individual components). For the purpose of determining how Croatian EFL learners of all levels (Elementary, Secondary, Undergraduate level, Graduate level) process idioms, a study was conducted by using multiple-choice questions and a Likert scale task in order to try and determine which of the abovementioned factors play greater role in idiom comprehension, i.e. if they influence processing to the same extent or if there exists a noticeable difference among them. The purpose of this paper is to set a direction for figurative language teaching in EFL situations by contributing to the existing body of knowledge on what facilitates the comprehension of idiomatic expressions.

An experimental study was conducted involving the metaphor-aware Experimental group and the Control group which was unaware of the existence of CMs. Metaphoric awareness was achieved through brief 15 minute-long lessons on metaphor and underlying motivation. The Control participants were given general information on figurative language in order to ensure equality of input. The instrument containing 35 items was administered to both groups whereas the Experimental group was also provided the underlying CM motivation. An ANOVA test for repeated measures was used to compare CM data to CS data. There was a statistically significant effect of motivation on idiom comprehension, F(1,77)=67.203, p=.000 which suggests that CM idioms...

Choosing to introduce materials through the ICT method can also add to their authenticity since learners are often exposed to authentic materials via computers and mobile devices. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of technology and authenticity of teaching materials on student motivation and reading comprehension. By manipulating levels of authenticity (non-authentic vs. authentic materials) we discovered greater comprehension was achieved with learners exposed to non-authentic texts through ICT whereas motivation in learners is still better achieved with authentic texts and ICT. Our pre-test motivational survey points to a strong correlation between authenticity and ICT and student motivation although better comprehension is still achieved through the use of classroom-adapted materials.

The purpose of this paper is to cast light on the nature of idiom comprehension among Croatian learners of English who are at upper-intermediate and advanced levels. Two groups were included in the research whereas the instrument comprised both pre-taught and novel vocabulary. The experimental group was treated by means of etymological background for each expression which was provided for them during their English course. The control group was instructed to remember as many expressions as they could by means of rote memorization strategies. Both groups were retested after a certain period in order to determine the retention of pre-taught and novel items and see whether the elaboration of etymological background exerted any effect on the retention.
