The main focus of this thesis is on the importance of teaching literature and the presentation of... more The main focus of this thesis is on the importance of teaching literature and the presentation of theoretical views that demonstrate why and how this type of teaching can be improved. The presentation of the methods and examples of teaching provided in the thesis are intended for EFL high-school students. The enrichment of teaching literature can be achieved through the aid of film and multimedia to compensate the lack of literary themes in the high-school environment in Croatia. For that reason the existing methods of teaching literature are listed and discussed upon, as new ways of incorporating film and multimedia are provided to demonstrate the ways in which the students could benefit from them. Finally, examples of incorporating film and multimedia with literary texts are provided to illustrate the way a teacher could use these types of resources to inspire cultural-growth and communication skills of his/her students.
This thesis examines the differences between the approaches to adaptation of a novel by European ... more This thesis examines the differences between the approaches to adaptation of a novel by European and American cinematography. It begins with the short examination of the history and differences between European and American cinematography. This part of the thesis is followed by a brief part dedicated to the differences between the art forms of novels and films, where the advantages and disadvantages of both art forms are pointed out. The paper is continued by the part in which the European novel Closely Observed Trains and film of the same name are compared and analyzed and the part in which the American novel The Last of the Mohicans is compared to the 1992 film adaptation. In the last section of the main part of the thesis both adaptations are examined and compared in greater detail. In the end of the paper the approach to adaptation and the differences between European and American cinematography is clear.
