The selection of the best supplier is a complex process because a lot of attributes must be integrated in the evaluation. Additionally, in the last years environmental attributes of suppliers are essentials to be considered increasing the difficulty of the process. Despite its importance, companies are not fully aware about the potential benefits that are gaining when environmental attributes and regulations are integrated in the supplier’s selection process, usually because environmental friendly products are more expensive. This research presents a structural equation model based on a survey applied to 206 purchasing managers or individuals with similar responsibilities in companies established in Mexico. The objective of this equation model is to generate a causal analysis useful to observe the relation between variables associated to environmental care from suppliers and the financial and corporative image gained. Finds indicate that companies are improving their profits and corporative image if environmental attributes are considered as additional supplier’s selection criteria, and usually these companies are also increasing the quality of their production process.

The data was obtained from 64 surveys applied to managers in the wineries in La Rioja, Spain. Direct, the indirect and total effects are analysed to prove six hypotheses that relate the aforementioned latent variables. The results indicate that the skills of human resources are a source of flexibility and agility in the supply chain for wineries in La Rioja and thus a direct and indirect source of economic performance.

The traditional way to generate a product contained the following stages: product design, raw material selection, material transportation, manufacturability, distribution and disposition at end of life. Product design for instance, is considered an extremely important stage of a product, being that, it directs the way the product can potentially be managed along the SC. It defines the raw material to be used, the possible supplier to select, the industrial processes involved in its fabrication, the packaging for its transportation and the newest stage where the product reaches its end of life and needs to be disposed. The Product design then becomes Green Product Design (GPD), where energy, time, resources become critical for a company. GPD takes into account the whole product life cycle. This chapter presents the importance of having a GPD process into the SC, the way to incorporate it, and the benefits of implementing it into the SC.

Nevertheless, the combinatorial explosion in decision problems related to systems with complex behavior requires a large use of computational resources, which may imply that many developed methodologies are unpractical for real-time applications. In this paper, the choice of the best production strategy for a manufacturing facility is afforded by means of an improved methodology, based in modeling with the formalism of the disjunctive colored Petri nets and the application of a search process in the solution space by means of a metaheuristic. A genetic algorithm has been chosen as an adequate artificial intelligence technique for solving this high level decision making. A classic approach has also been applied to this manufacturing facility to compare its performance with the proposed methodology. The new approach outperforms the classic one in this case study.

Previous works comparing ISSSCPNs with Forrester diagrams and linear ordinary differential equation systems (LODES), taking into account the information delays and some methodological considerations, demonstrated that ISSCPNs permit to model any LODES when known upper and lower bounds of the state variables exists. Therefore systems with cyclic behavior or delays in the information can be modeled. These results permit analyze the modeling and simulation of cyclic systems with ISSSCPNs based on the comparison with the behavior of LODES. This type of analysis is very usual in system dynamics, in order to develop models (usually with FD) for unknown systems whose evolution have been observed. The possibility of model sinusoid functions, and the addition/substation of markings in redundant places, permits ISSC...

Design/methodology/approach A survey is designed with benefits gained from AMT implementation as well as its categories, which is applied to the maquiladora industry. A structural equation model with data from 383 responses is used to measure the relationship between AMT categories and benefits gained using nine hypotheses that are tested statistically significant using partial least squares. Also, using conditional probabilities, a sensitivity analysis reports how low and high levels from AMT implementation influence on the obtained benefits. Findings Integrated systems are the most important AMT for maquiladoras and have the strongest impact on design, processes and commercial benefits. Sustainable construction is one of the main future objectives of the European Union; therefore, useful and reliable tools will be necessary for its implementation. The usefulness of the LCA for the selection of structural alternatives depends on the data quality. The Environmental Product Declarations collect the production phase of building materials, but it is necessary to incorporate the particularities in the implementation and use phases. This work proposes a stage that considers the use phase in the structural part that does not belong to the building envelope and provides a methodology that reflects the characteristics of each climate zone where it is applied. All of the representative variables to define the structure of a building are combined: column grids, variations in the geometry of one-way slabs, and different materials. A discrete model that incorporates 360 cases is constructed to compare the reliability of the model with a study on real structure projects. The results show the importance of the use phase in residential buildings with respect to the effects generated during the other phases (production, execution and demolition), as well as its high variations, up to 140.4%.
