VICINANZE E LONTANANZE DALL’EUROPA

The general perspective of the chapter is based on the thematic argumentations as follows. Prior to that, a brief presentation of characters who played focal roles in exposing power in the thirties in Europe and the Middle East seems indispensable. The first character is the Persian monarch Reza Shah Pahlavi (15 March 1878 – 26 July 1944) was the King of Iran from 15 December 1925 until he was forced to abdicate by the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran on 16 September 1941.He founded the Pahlavi dynasty in 1926 in Iran. Reza Shah and his role in making new Iran is also detected further on in the chapter. The presence of the king in the process of modernization of the country is unequivocal. In this regard, his role is highly comparable to the Italian conductor of fascism Benito Mussolini in the interwar period.
The nationalist system founded by Reza shah, had sensitive affinities with the fascist system in Italy whereas both were flourished amidst a somewhat romantic interpretation of their respective histories.

It is identifiably a garden city portion of the capital of the modernist/nationalist power. An empire that by establishing auto praised and sheer rules extracted from a span of 20 centuries of historical – culture times, aimed at generating a superior nation that was supposed to speak for the Italianism in the 20th century. This rather original form of nation-state has been called furthermore Fascism in terms of ideology of a nation, which had gradually opened its glorious and victorious mind-set, presumably identified as such by its very authors, towards a more sophisticated understanding of the other modern contexts of the thirties. This latter led many Italian architects to reproduce models of the other nations such as the northern European garden city-scheme by internalizing it amidst an implicit sense of historical continuity. In order to ponder on the architecture and the urbanism of the fascist context, this paper suggests valid references at the end but recommends scrupulously the reader to attain upon an important consideration. In order to have wider clarifications regarding the analysis on the Garbatella, it is recommended the comparative study of the entire ideological contexts characterized by the romanticised reading of their history. Attempting to study how each preceded and utterly ended and finally to this extent, examining Germany, Spain, Turky, Iran, USSR and particularly the Jewish context which are of excellent examples. Furthermore, it attempts to find out the roots of this absolute creating culture, highlighting the contrasting opinions between Isa Sadiq (1894 – 1979) and Mohammad Ali Foroughi (1875 – 1942) as prominent ideologues of the Pahlavi dynasty in the span of time between 1920 and 1940. This latter is finally extended to the exploring of critical historiography exposing the ideation of the Tomb of Sa'adi (1210 - 1292) in Iran in 1956 as the implicit plasticized quintessence of the architectural culture of power and absolutism.
The architectural romanticization could be profoundly overviewed as the lack of tangibility upon the surrounding realities as the epistemologist Jean Piaget (1896 – 1980) ascertained utterly when structured the basis of the child conception towards his surrounding realities in 1945. This romanticization has been constantly undertaken by both Iranian and foreign historiographies especially after the constitutional revolution of Iran in 1906. According to the ongoing ruling-power’s assumption of identity, the creation of architecture vary, maintaining however to respect the “culture of the power as the will of the masses”. When Hanna Arendt (1951) argued the phenomenology of totalitarian regimes in the 20th century, detected the vehement cultural origins of believes in absolutisms where the “time” is firm and petrified.
By power, absolutism and totalitarianism are usually intended the ruling systems, but the objective of this paper is to talk about an implicit form of power and somehow obstacle that is rarely expressed. The romantic glance towards the historiography perhaps is deeply rooted not only in the aspirators of power or predator of resources, despots and dictators but also in the profound sense of the historic culture, even that part of the culture which is praised beyond the boundaries of governments or ruling powers.

The focus of this intervention was mainly upon how the analytical studies can define scientifically the process of architectural identification of somehow less known although widely precise urban/residential contexts of Iran. To this extent, the comparison between the two politically/ideologically congruent histories of Iran and Italy of the early twentieth century via bringing out original modernist samples of the both realities, structured and strengthened the concentration/description and finally the historiographical outcome of the candidate’s conference-participation.

The case study of the chapter is the monitoring of the works of the Iranian architect Mohsen Foroughi who was employed to build the main architectural scheme of the power flourished in the thirties in Persia. Accordingly, to attain the objective of the chapter, which lies in the epistemology of humanities in relation to architecture, the first step is to define a comparative platform where the works of the Iranian architect could be deciphered amidst the study of the works and opinions of his contemporary colleagues in Europe as Marcello Piacentini. The comparison has been undertaken amidst the two PHDs of the author of the chapter. The second step is to study the Parisian education of the Iranian architect and his inherited Persian culture.
