The essay offers an analysis and a new reading of Pirandello’s All’uscita, a single act that the same author defined as «mistero profane». Paola Culicelli analyzes the theosophic suggestions within the orphic and mystery traces in the drama. Set at the exit of a cemetery, on the edge of existence, the story talks about the mystery of life. The place represents an antechamber where the characters, proper astral bodies, meet each other: out of life but still on this side. At this crossroads of souls that transmigrate, casting light on their own affairs just as they bid each other farewell, in search of a meaning, the philosopher’s fate is moving, doomed to stay on this side. This single act, imbued with theosophic and orphic suggestions, gives the opportunity to reinterpret Pirandello’s attention towards the occult and spirits, between fascination and disenchantment.
