The authors report the case of a 35-year-old man with chronic bilateral posterior uveitis refractory to corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents (methotrexate and cyclosporine) with a beneficial effect from treatment with infliximab.

The isolation and concentration of sulfas were carried out by solid phase extraction (C18) with methanol as eluent. After extraction, analytes were transformed in diazonium salts and coupled with resorcinol. Derivatives were quantified by HPLC (C8 column, λ = 430 nm, MeOH/KH2PO4 aq). Recoveries were obtainedbetween 65 and 78%.

A total of 90 cases of patients diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma were selected from the slide archives of Instituto Maranhense de Oncologia Aldenora Bello (São Luís, MA, Brazil). Pearsons correlation test was applied and did not reveal a statistically significant correlation (r = 0.095; p = 0.375) between TNM clinical classification and histologic malignancy grading, which was defined by Wahi (1971) and published by the World Health Organization (WHO). There was a significant correlation between the histologic malignancy grading and the size of the primary tumor as a clinical parameter (r = 0.229; p = 0.03).

The analyte isolation and concentration were performed by solid-phase extraction through a C-8 cartridge, pre-conditioned with hexane, methanol and water and eluted with MeOH. The recovery determination was done with a spiked solution of 20, 50 or 100 µg L-1. In this concentration range, the recovery was 83.2% with a RDS of 15.4%. For quantification, a Zorbax Eclipse XDB-C8 (4.6 mm x 150 mm, 5 µm), a mobile phase of MeCN: 0.01 mol L-1 KH2PO4 aq. (1:4), and a variable wavelength detector (275 nm) were used.

METHODS: PSR was used in a sample of 40 mothers, divided into: test group, consisting of mothers of premature newborns with weight less than 2,500 g (n=20), and the control group, consisting of mothers of term newborns with a weight equal to or over 2,500 g (n=20). The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, and the results of PSR were submitted to statistical analysis in order to verify differences in periodontal condition and need for treatment of the mothers, using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: the presence of periodontal pocket of 3.5 to 5.5 mm was the most common finding among the mothers of newborns with low weight (39.2% of the cases), while the presence of bleeding at probing and absence of a periodontal pocket were the most frequent findings among the mothers of newborns with normal weight (37.5% of the cases). There was a statistically significant difference between periodontal conditions of the mothers of the groups (p=0.0494), but in relation to the need for treatment, there was no significant difference between the studied groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: the mothers of preterm newborns with low weight presented worse periodontal conditions, suggesting that periodontal infection may be related to preterm low birth weight newborns.
