It is a timber road bridge, built in 1992, for one-way traffic and utilised by trucks for transportation of logs. It is located in Val Cadino (North-East of Italy), near Trento. Some static tests have been carried out with the aim of monitoring the structure in service and, if possible, of assessing damage of the material, if there is any. The case study indicated some additional topics, such as the importance of the quality of the wooden material; the correct design and the accurate manufacturing of structural details for durability; the importance of preservative treatments of wood; and the great importance of an adequate maintenance program of the structure. For the covering abstract see ITRD E122906.

The Emilia 2012 earthquake drew the attention of the department to this type of structure due to the damage that many of these buildings suffered. In this work, a dataset of 101 timber structures was analysed based on a simplified methodology that detects the major vulnerabilities in long-span timber roofs in order to help plan further investigations and retrofit interventions. Using fast and straightforward approaches, the elements most vulnerable to seismic action were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative evaluation of the vulnerabilities was achieved by applying the Italian Building Code. The aspects not considered in the quantitative evaluation were assessed through qualitative parameters inspired by damage identification forms (e.g. the AeDES form). The analysed structures are located near the e...

In current practice, interventions for the upgrading of carpentry joints are mainly based on empirical knowledge according to tradition, are not specifically conceived for the case of seismic action and often result in overstrengthening. The mechanical behavior of the carpentry joints is examined here with emphasis on those most used in roof structures. The main connection type is the birdsmouth joint, connecting rafters to the tie beam; its behavior has been studied numerically and experimentally in monotonic and cyclic conditions. Other forms of connection are discussed as well. Some general criteria for the seismic strengthening of these joints are presented.
