The article deals with the correspondence dedicated by Pavel Muratov to his journey in the United States published under the title Dni v Amerike (American Days) in the Russian emigration newspaper Vozrazhdenie, in order to identify the elements characterizing it as reportage.

He described the event in his memories Sto dnei schastia ili Moia pervaia Italiia (One Hundred Days of Happiness or my First Italy). The first chapter with the emblematic title Obetovannaia zemlia (The Promised Land) clearly declared that this essay belonged to the tradition of Italian text of Russian culture. One notices especially its affinity with Obrazy Italii (Images of Italy) by Pavel Muratov with whom he shared the idea (although in different terms) that Russia belonged to Europe through its common classical and Christian heredity. The essay blends two themes: the one in a personal diary featuring the author's own experience and the other devoted to the description of places. Veidle's Italy showed the beginning of a "new life" both concretely and spiritually. His voyage represented for him the passage from adolescence to youth while the peninsula, like Beatrice for Dante, aroused in him the love associated with artistic sensibility teaching him to learn how to absorb the beauty of cities and countries along with their histories.
Inner Journeys and Urban Itineraries in the Autobiographical Novel Daytime Stars by Olga Berggolt... more Inner Journeys and Urban Itineraries in the Autobiographical Novel Daytime Stars by Olga Berggolts · The article deals with two central episodes of the novel: the journeys of the main character between early October 1941 and February 1942 from the center of Len- ingrad to the suburb of Nevskaya Zastava. According to Lotman’s essays on semiotics of the city, these movements are characterized not only by the crossing of a spatial border but also by the perception of a temporal dimension, which places the city in the present time, in the protagonist’s personal biographical time and in the ideological time of the col- lective of which she feels part. The center of Leningrad is an ‘own’ space where she moved to a ‘House-Commune’ in 1930, while the peripheral space is subject to different interpre- tations. In 1941 it is perceived as a nostalgic return to the past, to her childhood home. But, it also appears, on the one hand, as an ‘alien’ place, symbolic of a despised petty bourgeois world, and, on the other, as an ideologically significant space. The faded revolutionary slo- gans on the facades of the factories bring back to the protagonist’s mind the image of her- self as a young and energetic komsomolka. In the journey of February 1942, the intimate time of the protagonist and the time of the city are anchored to the contingent situation. Both in the town center and in the suburbs, everything is still, frozen, and dead. However, the dialogue with her father pours new vitality into the protagonist: the periphery again becomes a proper place, a bearer of a hope of both individual and collective change.

In April 1944 Kravchenko decided to put an end to his ties with his own country and to stay in the Western world. In 1946 the English edition of his book I choose Freedom was published. In 1947, when the book was published in France, an article signed by a mysterious "Sim Thomas" appeared in the "Lettres françaises", where Kravchenko, described as a betrayer and a drunkard, was accused not to be the author of the book, which had arguably been written by American Mensheviks paid by the US intelligence. Berberova followed all the hearings of the trial and published her reports in the weekly newspaper "Russkaja Mysl" (La pensée russe). The narration develops along two main lines, constantly intertwining one another, i.e. the coverage given by the scrupulous and precise journalist and Berberova's personal narration of facts, declaring her right to subjectivity. The most important witness was Margarete Buber-Neumann. Through the narration of the hearings, each conceived as a tale in itself, the writer conveys the profound meaning that the trial had acquired for her and for the Russian diaspora, which shared her vision of the Stalinist regime, a vision that raised a sentiment of hostility in several French intellectuals, unresponsive for superficiality, ignorance or reluctance to open up a dialogue with those who were questioning the Soviet authority

The paper analyses some new elements introduced by Bunin in the perception of Italy in the light of the traditional vision codified in the Italian narrative of the Russian culture between the 19th and the early 20th Century. In the first place, Bunin differentiates himself choosing Capri, an unusual destination, for his long stays in Italy. Moreover, in his description of nature, he does not resort to the intermediation of visual or literary arts, instead, he esthetically elevates Italy’s nature recreating images that recall the connection with the absolute. He delineates a wider vision of a concept that is dear to the Russian travelers when it comes to the perception of Italy as a spiritual homeland, a concept that is not limited to the cultural link between Italy and Russia mediated by Byzantium, but reaches out to the Levantine East, embodying universal cultural and spiritual values. It highlights in the surrounding reality and everyday habits the features of an ancient cultural tradition that is brought to life in the present, reiterating the uninterrupted relation with the past

There Bunin describes himself as a antirevolutionary emigrant and as an acknowledged and actively publishing writer in emigration. At the same time he thinks over those elements depending on the time and addresses, giving his personality a different touch.
