The particular question posed is that of the central role that Freud attributed to the father in the Oedipus complex and, consequently, within the structure of the family. Are we led today « beyond Oedipus » – that is, « beyond the father » – and, if so, what are the consequences for thinking about parentage ? This problem was addressed in particular by Lacan who, by reinterpreting the Oedipus complex outside of a patriarchal framework, replaced it with the « paternal metaphor » and the Name of the Father, a concept that he borrows from religion. While our era seeks to restore the strength of the father with the help of biology, sometimes accompanied by a nostalgia for his imaginary power, our difficulty stems from the fact that we suffer from an incapacity for the symbolic bond of speech. On this level, all filiation is adoptive ; if the father plays a naming role, he does so to indicate that each birth bears witness to that which, being as yet unwritten, remains open to the future.

To introduce this collection, Jean-Daniel Causse positions the border concept at the junction of circumstances and structure. While, indeed, contemporary issues are especially relevant in the context that produces them, there is no denying that borders are a unique and intrinsically human construction. Three different meanings are discussed : the idea of exile as a reality experienced by those men and women who emigrate by choice or by force, but also as the fact that every person necessarily inhabits another person’s space ; the notion of borders as safeguards against fantasies about a world without boundaries, and the dramatic situations caused by borders used to separate identities often charged with a pro- pensity to persecute those who do not belong ; finally the border seen as a limit that can be broken thus granting ethical value to the very idea of transgression.

In his contribution, Jean-Daniel Causse alludes to Lacan’s numerous references to Christia- nity, to his atheism, as well to the notable place occupied by Augustinian thought in Laca- nian theory. He considers Lacan’s reinterpretation of the concept of grace from an analytic point of view as the kernel of Christianity. Distinguishing moral systems of reciprocity and of the accomplishment of a good, the doctrine of grace is a thought of immeasurability, of excess, and reveals itself as non-normative. Lacan does not take up the religious context, but fundamental structure, sustaining thus the value of the subject that is not adjusted to stan- dard determinations, a subject who relies on what is important only for him so as to invent the possible forms of his own existence.

Lacan and Christianity In this article Jean-Daniel Causse proposes to analyse the complex relations between religion and truth as regards Lacan’s statement that “Christianity is the true religion”. Here lies a problem of meaning, religion supposing a correspondence between truth and meaning where psychoanalysis postulates a separation. Lacan is however attentive to the fact that Christianity deconstructed the religious structures of classical theism–in particular with the idea of the death of God–and at the same time set in motion the negation of its proper foundation. From there, the differences between psychoanalysis and religion can be reconsidered in the treatment of contemporary forms of discontent.

“I, truth, speak”. Saying this, Jacques Lacan pointed to the truth which, from the seat of the Unconscious, is speaking, even though the subject keeps repressing it in order to know nothing of it. This article first highlights the status of the question of truth in psychoanalytic theory according to Lacan: if truth speaks, including and (maybe) especially as its own reverse, it is also stamped with a structural incompleteness which gives it, paradoxically, its potency. We then, in a second part, question anew the problem of truth in Christianity and the function of the witness. The paschal motif is here central, as it points to a truth removed from the knowledge which the witness is responsible for sharing. In a third movement, we shall question the meaning of “I am the truth” as uttered by Christ according to John’s Gospel, in dialogue with “I, truth, speak”.

Advent and expectation are at the heart of John D. Caputo’s philosophy of religion. Thus, “God” is the name of what is coming, what is always a-coming, which is why Caputo dismisses the theme of the death of God in favour of the birth of God, more in keeping with a philosophy of the event. The author discusses this question, indicating how Christianity is built upon a double absence or double kenosis which constitutes its understanding of the event. He then stresses and discusses three aspects of Caputo’s structure of the event – it cannot be foreseen, it is traumatic, it needs to be welcomed – before discussing how Christological messianism, close yet distinct from Derrida’s messianism, allows for the articulation of three tenses for the verb “come” : “he has come,” “he comes,” “he will come”.

Malaise in culture : a permanent crisis ? Within the framework developed by Freud in Civilization and Its Discontents, this article seeks to elucidate our times and understand a malaise that has probably always affected the human species and every culture. Sexuality raises many questions in this regard, between struggle and malaise, and enables us to think through part of what is at stake at present. While Freudien psychoanalysis has distanced itself from a certain ontology of the sexual considered as complementarity, Biblical monotheism, for its part, broke with the correlation of sexual and sacred, and Christianity proceeded to a “de-biologisation” of kinship terms. All of these considerations can be useful in approaching present-day issues.

The body and the mystical experience : an analysis in the light of Jacques Lacan and Michel de Certeau
In the mystical experience, the body is what is most intimate, and a stranger at the same time. The body is somehow « expropriated » from itself and placed in an Other situation. Relying on the approaches of Jacques Lacan and Michel de Certeau, Jean-Daniel Causse shows first that the mystical can slip into insanity : the subject is then delivered to an Other without limit and without rules. Still, one should not dismiss too fast some mystical attitudes which, through symptoms, attempt at saying something of a subjective truth. The mystical is essentially a device aiming at a starkness of the self, that is, a radical destitution of all imaginary attributes, in order to give a new status to that lack one needs to remain faithful to. Lack therefore allows for productive recompositions of the body. After this second step in the development, the article goes on to show that the mystical discourse is in the image of the body: forever lacking, it pursues an impossible-to-say and thus generates a language which is as inventive as it is proliferating.

Papers by Jean-Daniel Causse
In this article Jean-Daniel Causse proposes to analyse the complex relations between religion and truth as regards Lacan’s statement that “Christianity is the true religion”.
