It is argued that there is no insuperable conflict between the two, but that the mechanistic framework adds requirements that are not acknowledged in the model of property reduction. The second part concerns the relations between organization and environmental factors. Internal organization may be so tightly linked to external context that both have to be considered together.

One of the most pressing theoretical problems of psychiatry is the definition of mental disorder. Jerome Wakefield's proposal that mental disorder is “harmful dysfunction” has been both influential and widely debated; philosophers have been notably skeptical about it. This volume provides the first book-length collection of responses by philosophers to Wakefield's harmful dysfunction analysis (HDA), offering a survey of philosophical critiques as well as extensive and detailed replies by Wakefield himself. HDA is offered as a definition of mental disorder, but it is also the outcome of a method—conceptual analysis—and contributors first take up HDA's methodology, considering such topics as HDA's influences on the DSM, empirical support for HDA, and clinical practice. They go on to discuss HDA's ultimate goal, th...

In this paper, I establish a filiation between the philosophical tradition of though experiments derived from Locke's reflection on personal Identity and the perspective of Mind uploading. This filiation is especially important when we discuss what could be criteria of success in such a context and what is required by a genuine mind transfer. The vindication of mind uploading offered by Kenneth Hayworth is analyzed in its relation to its scientific credentials. I give reasons to doubt that Hayworth's optimism is justified by current scientific research in fields like connectomics and brain simulation.

Abstract. Mill examines the Design Argument in the last of his posthumous Three essays on religion. In this text, the argument is assessed according to the epistemic norms defined in the System of Logic and compared with Darwin's hypothesis of evolution by natural selection. To understand why according to Mill the Design argument finally outweighs the merits of a Darwinian explanation of biological adaptations, three levels of analysis are required: the relation between induction and the hypothetical method (theory of knowledge), the limitation of Mill' naturalistic commitment through phenomenalism (metaphysics) and the importance given by Mill to hope (moral philosophy). Philosophy of religion, through the question of the role of Design and the skeptical solution proposed in the Three essays, enables us to perceive the unity of Mill's philosophy.
