Lina Bo Bardi.
ABSTRACT This article examines how marked inequalities shaped by race, gender, and class oppressions are drawn in the spatial arrangements of reproductive and care activities in houses designed by modernist architects. Through the analysis of the emblematic "Glass House" by Lina Bo Bardi, and other modernist projects, the article demonstrates how the functionalist separation between "social" (collective and political) spaces and the so-called "service" spaces reflects and perpetuates certain social hierarchies. Through case studies and historical analyses, the article highlights how kitchens, laundries, and yards, traditionally associated with servitude in the architecture of colonial houses, sugar mills and plantations from the slave past, have remained as a symbol of a veiled coloniality that marks Brazilian modernism. The communication questions the true impact of the modernist movement in breaking traditional patterns of habitation space and how power structures persisted and were reinforced through the spatial organization of modern residences. KEYWORDS: Modernist architecture. Gender. Race. Lina Bo Bardi.
