Il mito di quel bel figlio della ninfa Liriope, che già appena nato meritava di essere amato. Proprio lui, Narciso — dal greco Nàrkissos che i più riconducono a Nàrké, stupore — portava fin dalla nascita, come spada di Damocle, un responso oracolare che lo invitava a non conoscere se stesso se mai avesse voluto arrivare a vecchiaia. Nonostante le diverse versioni del mito, tutti sanno che quel consiglio non verrà seguito. Infatti, per aver rifiutato l’amore della ninfa Eco e dopo che questa lo aveva maledetto, un giorno, trovandosi nei pressi di una fonte limpida, dalle acque argentee e trasparenti, spossato dalle fatiche e cercando di placare la sete, un’altra sete gli nasce. Si sporge verso la fonte per bere dall’immagine che vede riflessa e si innamora di quel corpo che solo ombra è. Attonito, non riesce ad allontanare i suoi occhi da quell’immagine: desidera, ignorandolo, sé stesso, amante e oggetto amato, mentre brama, si brama, e insieme accende ed arde. Si chiede in continuazione chi possa essere, fino a quando, struggendosi, non arriva alla conclusione che quello che vede e per il quale brama altro non è che se stesso. A tale scoperta, l’esclamazione non può non essere “Io, sono io!”.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt, La morte della pizia Fin dalla messa in scena dell'Edipo Re di Sofocle, avvenuta tra il 430 e 420 a.C, la storia di Edipo, dell'eroe che ha ucciso suo padre e sposato sua madre, ha sempre avuto grande eco nella cultura occidentale. Molti autori, filosofi e psicologi, hanno attinto alla fonte sofoclea per trarne complesse e talvolta forzate teorie. Il caso più emblematico, forse, è quello di Sigmund Freud, il quale estrapolò dal mito di Edipo un complesso che colpisce ogni uomo: desiderare di eliminare il proprio padre e congiungersi con la propria madre. La sua espe-rienza di medico l'ha portato a riconoscere nel rapporto con i genitori la parte più importan-te della vita psichica di tutti i bambini, per i quali l'amore per un genitore, l'odio per l'altro costituiscono un gruppo di fenomeni psichici fondamentali in vista di una futura nevrosi. Il complesso Edipico, così come viene esposto per la prima volta ne L'interpretazione dei So-gni , ancora non evidenzia il senso di colpa sulla cui base giace l'intera struttura della mora 1-le e della religione-sottolineatura che avverrà a partire dal successivo Totem e Tabù. Qui il padre della psicoanalisi colloca il mito all'interno della più ampia e articolata indagine del linguaggio del sogno e dei suoi abbellimenti sulle ostilità legate all'insorgere di desideri inappagabili. Questa tesi, così come quelle che ha ispirato, sono state confutate negli anni. In particolare J-P Vernant, nel suo saggio Edipo senza complesso del 1976, si chiede S.
