Professor Dr. Saifeldin A . F . El-Nagerabi
Microbiolog/Mycology: Biography
Dr. Saifeldin El-Nagerabi received his Ph.D. degree in Botany (Microbiology/Mycology) with Professor Abdulkadir E. Elshafie at Khartoum University (1997) and had postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Professor Alan Castle (Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Brock University, Canada) and as a visiting scientist in the laboratory of Professor Greg R. Thorn (Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, The University of Western Ontario, Canada). His primary field is Mycology with research interests focusing mainly on the ecology, taxonomy and biology of seed-borne fungi, mycotoxins in seeds, food and feed products and their control, nematophagous fungi, caprophilous fungi, pre- and post-harvest diseases and host-parasite relationship and associated enzymes. In 2007, Dr. El-Nagerabi joined the newly opened University of Nizwa, Oman (2004) and established the first Research Laboratory in the Department of Biological Sciences & Chemistry for Mycology and Microbiology Research (2010). He is the principal investigator of the fungal biodiversity of mountainous area (Aljabal AlAkhdar,) and the seed-borne fungi of indigenous crops and their biotechnologically important secondary metabolites which have significant applications in agriculture, industry and medicine. His research group is now developing experience in molecular identification of fungi and his lab is equipped with state-of-the art and biotechnology essential facilities. Biological control of aflatoxin and the search for simple, effective, cheap and environmentally safe methods is one of active areas where he is publishing in international and peer-reviewed journals such as Mycopathologia, Food Research and Food Control Journal of European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST).
