Less understood is how the Islamist party is unwavering in its moderation when circumstances are unfavourable for it. Analysing the alteration of the political behaviour of Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) in the post-2014 Indonesia, I show that Islamist party moderation is fragile, and the party returned to its idealism when the political environment causes severe ideological inconsistencies. The detachment from political incentives has made the PKS increasingly drawn to an aggressive opponent-style, and unsurprisingly became more involved in Islamist mobilisations for its electoral-idealist ends. The alteration in PKS behaviour towards idealism augments the theoretical presumption that Islamist parties emphasise ideological doctrine, so that whatever they adapt to the democratic political system is always vulnerable to returning to its idealism. This article concludes ...

However, the influence of the internet and social media use on Indonesian political culture has not been much discussed. This article explains changes in contemporary Indonesia’s political culture that align with the proliferation of new digital media by considering socio-political conditions and modernization. In its analysis, this article employs a historical-comparative method with an interpretive approach. The results of this study demonstrate that the traditional conception of power relation has historically influenced Indonesian political culture. In the post-Suharto era, the direct electoral system and primacy of television media promoted popular voter preferences that degraded traditional charismatic figures. The rise of the Internet and social media then had democratizing implications by increasing online public discussion. However, s...

Using the library research method, this paper explains why partisan volunteers present strategic positions in elections, especially in 2019. The results of this research reveal that the strengthening of the positions of partisan volunteers in elections is driven by the level of public trust in weak political parties in a strict and complex multiparty system, the emergence of flexible and civic-style political participation, and the co-optation of the voluntary understanding and function by political parties to reach undecided voters. The existence of volunteers was initially based on the antithetical spirit of an elitist political process, but later became a complementary element for political parties in the effort to win elections. Consequently, the involvement of partisan volunteers can lead to transactional politics and signifies a shift in the meaning of volunteers to that of a pragmatic arena.

The strong religiosity of society leads to religious packaging to help convey any political articulation in social media especially conducted by the Islamic civil societies. This article examines the political articulation uttered by Muhammadiyah, NU, and Muslim Cyber Army (MCA) as a representation of the democratization of Islamic civil society in responding to the contemporary political situation. Using the discursive analysis constructed by Laclau, this paper attempts to explain how Islamic organizations and groups build discourse and maintain its influence in social media as an alternative tone of political articulation. The results of this study indicate that social media has become a contested space of Islamic organizations and group to show their political position upon the government. The more an organization is close to the power the more it tends to reveal articulations that are in line with the government interest. Meanwhile, the opposing and incapable groups securing the social media a tool to delegitimized the authorities. The use of social media as political articulation has maintained democratization among Islamic civil society but within the limits of democratic values applied. Social media can also be used to strengthen the discourse of religious politicization that has the potential to contradict democratization itself.
