Abstract

Interactive technology has been one of the most important inseparable wheels of SIGGRAPH Asia, and the Emerging Technologies program plays a vital role in driving the research communities all over the world to pursue technological innovations that has a great impact on our everyday life.

This year, the Emerging Technologies program presents a broad scope of topics, reflecting the innovation of interactive technologies and a maturation of the field as it expands to include interactive visualization and other graphics-related technologies.

Be fascinated by hands-on demonstrations that expand the limits of current display technologies, and exciting new hardware that enable sophisticated and nuanced user input, innovative interaction techniques that enable more complex interaction with application data and functionality, as well as excellent examples of haptics developed to support multi-/cross-modality scenarios.

abstract
Coded skeleton: programmable deformation behaviour for shape changing interfaces
Article No.: 1, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988252

Soft and organic interfaces have been studied for soft robotics as alternatives for hard bodies toward real-world oriented interaction. These interfaces are generally called programmable matter - controlling objects in the real world - and they are now ...

abstract
Phygital field: an integrated field with a swarm of physical robots and digital images
Article No.: 2, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988242

Collaboration between computer graphics and multiple robots has attracted increasing attention in several areas. To preserve the seamless connection between them, the system needs to be able to accurately determine the position and state of the robots ...

abstract
Vibroplay: authoring three-dimensional spatial-temporal tactile effects with direct manipulation
Article No.: 3, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988250

Vibrotactile feedback provides immersive media experience. To facilitate the design of vibrotactile effects, an authoring system is essential. Soundtrack streamlined interfaces [Ryu and Choi 2008; Lee et al. 2009] were initially initially introduced to ...

abstract
HapticAid: wearable haptic augmentation system for enhanced, enchanted and empathised haptic experiences
Article No.: 4, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988253

We present HapticAid, a wearable system that enhances haptic sensations. The system consists of a wearable skin vibration sensor that is placed at the middle phalanx of a finger, a processor that processes haptic information, and a wrist-worn haptic ...

abstract
Towards VR and AR: 360° light field display with mid-air interaction
Article No.: 5, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988251

We present a 360° light field display to visualize 3D objects above the table-top screen, and provide a graspable and measurable virtual or augmented reality environment. The display is constructed by a spinning flat-plate deflected diffuser screen, a ...

abstract
Bottomless joystick

We propose a physical interface called a "Bottomless Joystick" for mid-air interaction in this Virtual Reality era. A conventional joystick is suitable for desktop gaming, especially flight simulations. However, it cannot be used in mid-air because it ...

abstract
Emotion hacking VR (EH-VR): amplifying scary VR experience by accelerating real heart rate using false vibrotactile biofeedback
Article No.: 7, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988247

Emotion hacking virtual reality (EH-VR) system is an interactive system that hacks one's heartbeat and controls it to accelerate scary VR experience. The EH-VR system provides vibrotactile biofeedback, which resembles a heartbeat, from the floor. The ...

abstract
EV-pen: an electrovibration haptic feedback pen for touchscreens
Article No.: 8, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988241

This paper presents an Electrovibration Pen (EV-Pen) which incorporates electrovibration into pen interactions. The EV-Pen not only exploits the advantages of conventional pen-based interactions but also provides a wide range of haptic feedback modes ...

abstract
Gushed light field: design method for aerosol-based fog display
Article No.: 9, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988244

We present a new method to render aerial images by aerosol-based fog screens. Conventional fog screens are easily affected by the air flow and their generator occupy large areas. In this study, we propose to add new tradeoffs between limited display ...

abstract
Reality forge: interactive dynamic multi-projection mapping
Article No.: 10, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988254

Creating digitals assets, especially surface textures is a tedious, and often unintuitive task. We built a fun to use, interactive projection-mapping system that aims to simplify this process.

abstract
Coded facial expression
Article No.: 11, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988243

Projection based augmented reality, which is a type of Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR), can directly apply augmentation to the real world by illumination projection. The use of a camera enables the target tracking and geometrical correction of the ...

abstract
Skyanchor: no latency anchoring of mid-air images onto real objects
Article No.: 12, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988248

For glass-free mixed reality (MR), mid-air imaging is a promising way of superimposing a virtual image onto a real object. This demonstration particularly focuses on MR systems that manipulate virtual images with real objects. When you move the real ...

abstract
Cross-field haptics: tactile device combined with magnetic and electrostatic fields for push-pull haptics
Article No.: 13, Pages 1–2https://doi.org/10.1145/2988240.2988246

The representation of texture is a major concern during fabrication and manufacturing in many industries. Thus, the approach for fabricating everyday objects and the digital expression of their textures before the fabrication process has become a ...
