Cinematic Prototyping: Exploring Future Interactions without Prototyping Technology

Published: 20 April 2018 Publication History

Abstract

Having filmmaking codes and techniques, interaction design and sound design at its core, Cinematic Prototyping is a blend of design fiction and interaction prototyping, which enables the exploration and development of new product interactions, made possible by future technologies, without being restricted by the limitations of current prototyping platforms, such as Arduino. As such, it provides designers ways to fully concentrate on the exact interplay between product and user within a specific context. As emerging technologies are researched and developed in consortia consisting of industrial, academic and societal stakeholders, cinematic prototypes can offer shared spaces for dialogue, in which goals can be aligned and critical issues can be discussed. The video presents an example of a cinematic prototype that shows how a smart jacket could support veterans suffering from PTSD when experiencing negative outbursts.
