Anita Barbee
Anita P. Barbee, MSSW, Ph.D. is a Professor and Distinguished University Scholar at the Kent School of Social Work, University of Louisville. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in Social Psychology in 1988. She and her team have secured $33 million in extramural funding from numerous local, state and federal agencies such as the Children's Bureau, Office of Family Assistance, SAMHSA, and OJJDP to develop, execute and evaluate training and to build capacity in family and youth serving organizations such child welfare, juvenile justice, and out of school time agencies to improve policy, practice and outcomes for families, youth and children affected by trauma. She was also PI on an Office of Adolescent Health Tier 2 grant from 2010-2016. She led a three-arm, cluster randomized controlled trial with 1438 youth between the ages of 14 and 19 comparing Reducing the Risk as well as Love Notes with a control training- The Power of We- and utilized four follow up periods of data collection at 3,6,12 and 24 months. As a result of that study Love Notes is now on the OAH list of evidence based TPP programs and Reducing the Risk has a high rating. Across four grants, Dr. Barbee and her teams have or are reaching 2800 vulnerable adults and 2000 youth with interventions aimed at strengthening their relationships and parenting skills, and preventing intimate partner violence, pregnancy and the spread of STIs/HIV.
Dr. Barbee has taught the Social Work and Human Sexuality course with over 600 BSW and MSSW students since 2001. Dr. Barbee is President-Elect of the International Association of Relationship Research (IARR) and is on the Editorial Boards of Annual Editions: Human Sexuality, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, and Personal Relationships. She was Associate Editor of Personal Relationships from 2008-2012. In 2014 and again this fall, she worked with the Brookings Institution, Center for Universal Education, Echidna Global Scholars from South African, Zimbabwe and Nepal on studies examining the relationship between Sexual and Reproductive Health and Girls’ Education. In 2015, Dr. Barbee spoke on the Hill at a Congressional Briefing regarding the reproductive health of foster youth as a part of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. She has conducted over 70 studies on relationship initiation and maintenance, social support in close relationships, and the impact of relationship education on various outcomes. In addition she has published articles about sexual behavior, adaptations to sex education interventions, and coping with HIV/AIDS in professional journals such as the Journal of Sex Research, AIDS and Behavior, the Journal of Health Psychology, Journal of Research in Personality, Journal of Loss and Trauma, Women and Therapy, and the American Journal of Sexuality Education. She and Val Derlega edited a book on HIV Infection and Social Interaction in 1998, which was one of the first volumes devoted to coping with HIV/AIDS.
