This is done by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of traffic data with support of the findings of a benchmark study. The benchmark framework is designed to assess the performance of the least square dynamic OD estimation methods using different traffic data. Results show that despite the use of traffic condition data to identify traffic regime, the use of unreliable prior OD demand has a strong influence on estimation ability. The greatest estimation ability occurs when the prior OD demand information is aligned with the real traffic state or omitted using information from AVI measurements and thus reinforces the necessity of establishing appropriate and meaningful values of OD demand. A common feature observed by various methods indicate that advanced traffic data require more research attention and fundamentally different app...

AIMSUN2 is an advanced interactive microscopic simulator which has been under development over the last years, and has been, and is currently being used, in projects of the past ATS European Programmes and current 4th Framework Programme. Projects CLAIRE, SOCRATES, SOCRATES KERNEL, SOCRATES 3, ARTIS, KITS, ENTERPRICE or RHAPIT2 are just examples of that. In applications for real-time traffic management and information systems, traffic simulation could become the proper tool for short term predictions at the network level, and assessment of the proposer policies, if computing times can be shortened properly. For large scale models parallelization appears to be a natural way to achieve the required speed-up objectives. This paper describes the parallelization approach used, and presents the first computational results of the parallelization of the Traffic Simulator AIMSUN2, on a model of Barcelona's Ring Roads, for a real-time traffic management application.

Locally developed tailor-made solutions, based on active public participation processes, are essential to make the city more attractive, cleaner and healthier thus, a better place to live, work, and play. This challenge, of sustainable urban transportation, demands a comprehensive holistic approach able to cope with the complexity, multidisciplinarity, and socio-technical dimension of the system-of-interest. The environmental aspect of sustainability is critical being at the agenda of the modern world. Modelling the traffic and the related environmental impacts at the micro level is decisive to describe adequately the urban dynamics, to provide personalized real-time information, to test Intelligent Transportation Systems strategies and evaluate their impacts, and to support accurate decision-making processes. This work highlights the relevance of this micro modelling approach, particularly for traffic & air quality, providing a guide through the existing modelling approaches and suggesting the appropriated models and tools to undertake the green mission.

Microscopic traffic simulation has proven to be one of the most useful tools to achieve these objectives, and thus microscopic traffic simulation has become an ever increasing field of research and development. The development of a microscopic traffic simulator represents a double challenge: traffic and network modeling on one hand, and how to embed the models in a software platform interfacing the user in a friendly and efficient way. This paper summarizes the most relevant concepts in microscopic traffic simulation, and how they have been implemented in AIMSUN2. Other applications of microscopic traffic simulation can be envisaged provided the computing time can be shortened properly. For large scale models parallelization appears to be a natural way to achieve such speeding-up objectives. The paper concludes by describing the parallelization approach used and presenting the first computational results of the parallelization of AIMSUN2.
