The medieval bronze doors and its pictorial cycles as an expression of liturgy: analysis of selec... more The medieval bronze doors and its pictorial cycles as an expression of liturgy: analysis of selected examples The principal goal of this paper is to discovery a relationship between pictorial pro-grams of bronze doors of some european churches and the liturgy celebrated in these churches. There is a group of doors, that have been decorated with images represent-ing scenes of Old and New Testament. These are doors from Hildesheim, Verona, Płock and doors made by Bonanus of Pisa – from cathedrale of Pisa and cathedrale of Dariusz Tabor CR122 Monreale. Its pictorial cycles reveal some balance between images of Old and images of New Testament. On the one hand the Old Testament pictures seems to forecast the events of New Testament. On the other hand the doors of Płock, Piza and Monreale have strictly christological image program, although at the beginning of narative Old Testament elements were also introduced. In search of the perfect wilderness. Anchoritism in Cistercian art and spirituality

The anchoretic trend in Cistercian spirituality has always been the subject of many studies. Cist... more The anchoretic trend in Cistercian spirituality has always been the subject of many studies. Cistercian anchoritism has been analysed by researchers such as George Duby, Terryl Kinder, Janet Burton and Julie Krery, Mette Bruun and Emilia Jamroziak. Exordium parvum and Vita Sancti Bernardi are basic sources containing key information on the origins of the Cistercian order. They describe the departure of Robert of Molesme and his group as a journey to the wilderness (ad eremum) in order to find better conditions for practising the rule of St. Benedict and following forefathers – Egyptian monks. Clairvaux II, Pontigny and Fontenay – first Burgundian churches of the Cistercians took form of a three-nave basilica with a transept (1130–1160). The temples were supposed to provide the best setting for contemplation. The so-called “Bernardine plan” was applied in the second generation of Cistercian churches, e.g. Fossanova, San Galgano, Casamari, Arabona, Haina (1148–1180). However, the plan...

Studies on medieval images of the life of Jesus Christ have so far focused either on the narrativ... more Studies on medieval images of the life of Jesus Christ have so far focused either on the narrative perspective of the Christological cycle, presenting in a holistic and synthetic way the life and work of the Saviour, or isolated the Passion cycle revealing the suffering and death of Christ. However, in the Middle Ages there was a clear trend which focused on the events of last days of his life and events following his death. Such events are referred to as the Passover of Christ or the Paschal Mystery. This study is aimed not only to indicate sample presentations of the Passover but also attempts to interpret them.

This is a series of historical events, presented in the canonical Gospels, in which Jesus from Nazaret was submit to the suffering, death, but was revived and bas ascend 10 the glory. These events was M l of meanings and significations. This significations of paschal event has been meditated and analyzed in the Christian text, in Gospels, in Paul’s Letters, but in the sermon of Fathers of the Church. Meliton of Sardes, Orygenes, Pseudo-Hypolite, and others are known as the interpreters of paschal events. The liturgical texts Exultet and Victimae Paschali explain the profound sense of the Death and the resurrection of Christ All these works inspired the iconography. This presentation has to review the some works of art in Central Europeand interpretations their theological sense. The gestures will be the key to discovery of meaning.

Hermeneutyka Maxa Imdahla wyróżnia widzenie rozpoznające temat ikonograficzny oraz widzenie widzą... more Hermeneutyka Maxa Imdahla wyróżnia widzenie rozpoznające temat ikonograficzny oraz widzenie widzące szczególną strukturę obrazu. Hermeneutyka Godfrieda Böhme jest przekładem zamiany medium wizualnego na medium obrazowe, przy znalezieniu tego, co obu wspólne (Bildlichkeit). Oskar Bätschmann odrzuca redukcje, jakim poddaje dzieło sztuki ikonologia i dąży do odkrycia tego, co dzieło samo z siebie ujawnia. Te hermeneutyki kierują ku wyjątkowej swoistej, nieredukowalnej do dyskursu strukturze dzieła. Badanie sztuki średniowiecznej wymaga wyjścia poza ścisłą strukturę wizualną. Podjęto próbę zastosowania procedur właściwych hermeneutyce filozoficznej Hansa Georga Gadamera. Jej podstawą jest istnienie przedpoznania, rzeczywistej wiedzy na temat dzieła oraz stosowanie języka wykluczającego bezrefleksyjne stosowanie kodów. Droga badawcza dalej skierowana jest ku tradycji. THE CHRISTOLOGICAL PSALTER IN THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY IN WROCLAW (IF 440), TOWARDS BIBLICAL EXEGESIS AND CISTERCIAN SPIRITUALITY OF 13TH CENTURY The psalter of Trzebnica (Trebnitz) (Wroclaw, University Library IF 440) has been kept since 1810 in the collection of manuscripts in the University Library of Wroclaw. It has been registered in two catalogues – catalog of J. Ch. Friedriech and catalog of W. Goeber. This codex was an object of researches and studies of many scholars. The first of them was Artur Haseloff, who collocated this manuscript in the Thuringian-Saxon school of book painting of 13th century. Many other scholars contributed to the knowledge about this book. The article focuses on miniatures of an enthroned emperor. These are: the miniature showing Otto II from the Registrum Gregorii (Chantilly, Musée Condé, MS 14), two miniatures from the so-called Gospels of Otto III (Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm. 4453)—one showing Otto III and the other one showing the allegories of the provinces of the empire, two miniatures (Otto II and the provinces) contained in the Gospels bound in the code also containing works by Flavius Josephus (Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek, Class. 79) and the miniature with the figure of Otto III found in the Liuthar Gospels, also called the Aachener Evangeliars (Aachen, Domshatz). The pictures were studied by Percy Ernst Schramm, Piotr Skubiszewski, Henry Mayr-Harting, Wolfgang Christian Schneider, Ludger Körntgen, Hagen Keller and Eric Palazzo.
