This paper analyzes Czech and Slovak dubbed versions of the first season of the American TV serie... more This paper analyzes Czech and Slovak dubbed versions of the first season of the American TV series Glee. The primary focus is on the Slovak version which exemplifies the low quality of Slovak dubbing for commercial televisions. The Czech version is used to demonstrate more adequate solutions to the problems that both versions had to deal with. A number of excerpts from the original and the dubbed versions is presented together with author’s commentary. The paper discusses semantic shifts and errors in translation for dubbing, dialogues – screen correspondences, some translation strategies and general approaches of the Slovak and Czech versions.

language in the Slovak classroom. It presents the various benefits and
drawbacks of bringing TV series into the teaching process based on the
theoretical sources available on this topic and also based on
a questionnaire carried out among the Slovak teachers in 2015. It
attempts to solve at least some of the problems that may stand in the
teachers’ way when they decide to use TV series in their classroom. The
author proposes a guide table with a list of activities developed
specifically for the purpose of using TV series to teach English. The table
involves a description of each activity, the skill(s) it develops and the
level of difficulty of their preparation. The main focus is on making it as
easy for the teacher to use a TV series as possible.

This paper deals with dubbing and its specifics in Slovakia. The categorization of countries acco... more This paper deals with dubbing and its specifics in Slovakia. The categorization of countries according to their preference in audiovisual translation is reconsidered and redesigned around the current data regarding audiovisual translation in Europe. The focus of the article then shifts to dubbing in Slovakia and to some extent Czech Republic, where there is a strong preference for dubbing over subtitling in television production. A heuristic basis for the process of dubbing production based on personal experience and observations of the author is introduced and some issues that arise during this process are addressed. The current situation and changes in comparison to the past in the (Czecho-)Slovak dubbing are depicted and analyzed. The paper offers a brief outlook on dubbing from a rather empirical point of view. Introduction The tradition of dubbing is characteristic of only a few countries in Europe. Audiovisual translation (AVT) has a much richer history and tradition in those countries that naturally felt the need to dub or subtitle what was produced in other states and in foreign languages. Some countries opted for subtitling, others for dubbing or voice-over. Even today, we can call certain countries " dubbing countries " and other " subtitling countries " (Gottlieb in Baker, 2001 p. 244) and, although this division has turned out to be insufficient (see e.g. Szarkowska, 2005), it is clear that the tradition of dubbing as a prevailing form of audiovisual translation is present only in some countries. This paper looks closely at how the countries are divided according to their prevailing audiovisual translation preference and then takes a closer look at the process of dubbing production in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Prináša zhrnutie teoretických poznatkov z tejto sféry, vyzdvihnutie výhod seriálov, ich žánrovú kategorizáciu a odporúčania k ich používaniu. Empiricky zisťuje aktuálny stav v tejto oblasti na Slovensku a to konkrétne dotazníkom, na ktorého výsledky ďalej reaguje vytvorením pomocných tabuliek pre učiteľov.

This thesis belongs to the field of translation theory. Its main objective is to analyse a recursively translated text from the point of view of translation techniques and to draw attention to the recursive translation, as well as to the possibilities of its application. Theoretical part of this thesis focuses on the commonly used translation techniques and gives many illustrative examples. The analytical part exemplifies recursive translation, introduces new terminology and a definition of this phenomenon. It also comparatively analyses a culturally significant text recursively translated by 4 professional translators. The hypothesis states that translation techniques employed by different translators on the same unit of translation in the recursive translation will be identical or will at least create a certain observable pattern. Secondary hypothesis claims that a technique mostly used by the translators in a given text will be transposition. This work may be further used for any study concerned with recursive translation and/or translation techniques.
This thesis is concerned with dubbing in Slovakia (and Czech Republic). Its main objective is to ... more This thesis is concerned with dubbing in Slovakia (and Czech Republic). Its main objective is to draw more attention to dubbing, translation for dubbing and its rather low quality when produced for commercial televisions and to map the current situation in the field of dubbing in Slovakia. Theoretical part offers a cross-author overview of the terminology in the field of audiovisual translation and arrives at a unified list of different types of revoicing. It also takes a look at the history of and current tendencies in dubbing and specific requirements on translation for dubbing. The empirical part presents the results of a questionnaire about dubbing with over 1 100 respondents and an in-depth analysis of the Czech and Slovak dubbed versions of the first season of the American TV series Glee. This comparative analysis with commentary contrasts the original, the Slovak and the Czech versions and discusses translation solutions, negative shifts and any issues connected with the solution offered to the Slovak viewer. The instances presented are divided according to the linguistic levels and a separate section is devoted to the general tendencies, strategies and methods in the series as a whole. It follows from the nature of the analyzed material that the main focus here is on the negative shifts in the Slovak dubbing. Several sections of this work are based on the author’s personal experience from working for a dubbing studio. This means that the thesis offers not only a unique empirical research and a questionnaire with a high number of respondents but also new and unpublished theoretical information on the practices in dubbing, production and the rates in the translation for dubbing.

Th... more In this presentation, we discuss dubbing in Slovakia in comparison with its Czech counterpart. The theoretical background of this form of translation is introduced shortly. To further illustrate the current situation in this area, the results of a questionnaire with more than 1 000 respondents are presented. These findings illustrate the opinion of the Slovak audience on both Czech and Slovak dubbing productions. A comparative analysis of the original, Czech and Slovak version of an American TV series Glee is also presented. The analysis is concluded with possible causes behind the current state of dubbing.
