For Wassily Kandinsky, the compositional white area in his expressive abstractions was the all-important opening of pictorial space through which the complexity of the world was to be reflected synaesthetically and thereby art simultaneously ranked alongside science. Piet Mondrian, for his part, tried to find universal harmonies through the depiction of mathematical problems behind visible phenomena. His exploration of »non-colour« in his grids of black lines and primary coloured surfaces forms a »neoplastic system« devoid of any representational function and is unique in the history of painting. On the occasion of the 2014 Quadrennial, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen will premiere an attractive synopsis the work of these three great artists, considered the most prominent pioneers of the avant-garde and of abstraction in the twentieth century. The show will focus upon selected major works and the complex issue of white surfaces, all which is meticulously recreated the catalogue. The discussion of materiality and immateriality of the colour white arising here is also reflected in the latest research results from the restoration process. This leads to some surprising answers that are treated separately. If the colour white provided an umbrella for art, science and parareligions, did it necessarily have to function as a symbol of a future world?

Coloured Universe and the Russian Avant-Garde. Matiushin on Colour Vision in Stalin's Russia 1932, 2003

New institutes were established for new collaborations. A universal language was to traverse the borders between different art forms, countries and languages. Even the boundary separating the perception of humans and animals, would be crossed. At the Institute for Artistic Culture in Petrograd/Leningrad the violinist, painter and theorist Mikhail Matiushin (1861-1934) supervised the Department of Organic Culture where a 'grammar of colour' was produced for the use in architecture and design. The sounds made by ice melting, the feel of footsteps in the wet moss – all surrounding impressions from the sky, sounds of birds and the dynamics in motion would influence colour in its appearance. A training programme was elaborated based on a cross-extension of the senses, yoga and meditation, opening up new channels believed to be passed on to coming generations.

But wait! Not everyone viewed things in exactly the same way. The Group for Organic Culture visited different places in the city of Petersburg/ Petrograd/ Leningrad to make observations. One such place was the steps down to the water in front of the Academy of Arts. One day a conventional academy-professor saw them there and became outraged: "They sat with their backs to the river painting it." The spot however, was well chosen. What did they see? Oddly, there were (and still are) two stone sphinxes. What are Egyptian sphinxes doing in northern Europe? Why in St Petersburg? And why this location? What did they see from between the sphinxes on the steps down to the river Neva? From the well-chosen spot between the Egyptian sphinxes, they saw a panorama of tasteful palaces. They practiced vision with a 360° angle. But to be able to see what happened behind your back also meant having to be vigilant.

Art, Science and Technology (AST), kinetic art, light and colour in motor-driven art work has bee... more Art, Science and Technology (AST), kinetic art, light and colour in motor-driven art work has been a rich experimental field from the 1960s onwards – at Moderna Museet in Stockholm with the groundbreaking "Rörelse i konsten / Movement in Art", in New York with Billy Klüver, in Buenos Aires with Julio Le Parc, in Zagreb with Srnec and the New Tendencies, and in Boston with György Kepes, the Hungarian-born teacher of light and colour at the new Bauhaus in Chicago who founded the Centre for Advanced Visual Studies at Massachusets Institute of Technology, MIT in 1947, and which later, in 1974, was taken over by the Düsseldorf artist Otto Piene.
Behind the Iron Curtain, the networks of art and technology, science, architecture and design draw a fascinating map. In the former Eastern Bloc and the Soviet Union, this was terrain where secret classified technology in closed-off factories and research institutes met with the newest currents in art. In Latvia, a high water mark of the kineticists who worked with colour and light in movement was in the 1970s and 1980s. Yet so far they haven’t received the attention they deserve. In the Soviet Union abstract art was forbidden. All the same, kinetic abstract art was exhibited in the very city center of Riga, then a part of the Soviet rule. Moscow sent an art critic for a verdict of the exhibition. The situation was threatening. But. The artists found a way around the censorship. The art was described as necessary for better organization of labour and work places. Precisely this was an important objective for technical aesthetics – raising the quality of workplace conditions. The article includes interviews with Latvian artists Artūrs Riņķis, Valdis Celms and Janis Borgs.

Nyansering av det sovjetiska avantgardet – en utopisk epok”, essay review av Laboratory of Dreams: the Russian avant-garde and cultural experiment. John E. Bowlt and Olga Matich, eds. Stanford University Press. Stockholm, DN kultur, Tredje Sidan, 4 mars, 1998. Namn som nämns i artikeln är: Zhores Medvedev, David Joravsky, Trofim Lysenko, Boris Gasparov, Mikhail Bakhtin, Henri Bergson, Pavel Filonov, Leo Tolstoy, Fedor Gladkov, Alexandra Kollontay, Nikolai Federov, Frankenstein, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Olga Matich, Michael Holquist, Lenin, Laika, Gagarin, Malevich, Ronald Reagan.

Matthew Cullerne Bown, Yale University Press, 1998.

The Russian Academy of Artistic Sciences. Nicoletta Misler, guest ed. Los Angeles 1997. DN kultur 27 augusti 1998.

Georgy and Vladimir Stenberg, central participants of the Russian avant-garde and the first to use the term "constructivist", were Swedish. Thanks to the first international 'two-person' museum exhibition on the Stenberg brothers, in the summer of 1997 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, interest in their work has been renewed. The focus of the MoMA exhibition was on the film posters. In addition to the Stenbergs' work as constructivists and theatre scenographers, this is the part of their work that has brought them most international fame. There is, however, one aspect which, if mentioned at all, is mentioned only in passing: the Stenbergs were chief designers for the Moscow Red Square festivities. In addition to a brief presentation of the Swedish heritage of Vladimir Augustovich (1899 - 1982) and Georgy Augustovich Stenberg (1900 - 1933), the aim of this article is to introduce the Stenbergs as designers for the celebrations in the Red Square. Other key places along the parade route in central Moscow were the Palace of the Soviets and Gorky Park. The Stenberg brothers participated in all three projects. In order to get an idea of what proportions these mass stagings had, I discuss them in the context of the reconstruction of Moscow into a parade centre, the first five-year plan, and the cultural revolution, all of which took place at the same time as the Stenbergs established themselves as designers for street festivities. First of all, however, I give a short background of Georgy and Vladimir Stenberg and their aesthetical standpoints in art.

Sweden sent a big delegation to Russia. More than forty of the small country’s top designers and influencers participated, which was more than twice as many as usual to these international design congresses.
Thanks to reactions published about the events in journals on design in Sweden and in the Soviet Union, archival material, and the author’s own interviews with the delegates from Sweden who participated in Moscow, as well as one-off exclusive backstage witnesses from the local staff of the host organization during the ongoing congress, Moscow 1975 is experienced through the eyes of contemporary witnesses.
The essay gives new insights into the world congress in design and illustrates the international atmosphere during the Cold War.

Utmattningssyndrom i Socialismens konst.

In 1967 their Cyberevents was shown in the engineering block of the Peter and Paul fortress in Leningrad, followed by Little Eagle, a cybernetics pioneer game-amusement camp in Odessa, and Cybertheater. The Artificial Bio-Kinetic Environment from 1969, was a utopian virtual reality project presenting a future city of 35-40 million people. Paradoxically enough, Dvizhenie’s members were able to move in the circles both of the extremely official (propaganda produced for international trade shows, military and space research, design for control rooms at airports and big industries) and the in-official (free jazz, long hair, drugs, existentialism and Hemingway) - that the people interested in cybernetics, new technology, design, art, bionic-architecture and future urbanism and city planning frequented.
Dvizhenie was the first group in the Soviet Union that succeeded to produce big exhibitions “without content” from the point of view of Socialist Realism ideology. How did they manage? This essay gives a historical context for the visual traces and present concrete strategies to realize them.

A pioneer of abstract art, the reception of Kandinsky's paintings ranged from "sensational" to "not considered to be art" (the reason why the city of Malmö decided not to buy the paintings even for a bargain price). In 1916 Kandinsky's partner Gabriele Münter arranged a sales show for him in Stockholm, where they spent three month together in 1915-1916. The show received reviews in all important newspapers, and Kandinsky became personally acquainted with Stockholm's major artists, critics and art historians.

Matiushin’s (1861-1934) colour handbook The Laws Governing the Variability of Colour Combinations. Colour Manual (Zakonomernost’ izmeniamemosti tsvetovykh sochetanij. Spravochnik po tsvetu), Leningrad and Moscow IZOGIZ 1932 – and especially the aspects that can be described as “organic”, ideas that, to a large extent, were inspired and stem from Matiushin’s prematurely deceased wife, painter and poet Elena Guro (1877-1913). In spite of the fact that the colour handbook was stuffed away in archives during the hard core years of Socialist Realism following his death, my extensive archival research has shown the surprising fact that followers of Guro and Matiushin – one member of Matiushin’s “colour brigade” Elena Khmelevskaya even worked for the planning office for the beauty of the city, and even produced a new colour scheme for Leningrad. In practice this meant that Guro-Matiushin-Khmelevskaya actively participated in the repainting of Leningrad after World War II, including railway stations and even the main street – Nevsky Prospekt – a stunning and amazing fact considering what the organic culture of Guro and Matiushin stood for inspired by French philosopher Henri Bergson’s ideas on the connection between the organic world of plants to a “supra-consciousness”: Nature as part and foundation of city culture – everything a process and in flux – conscious of the dynamics of life they were very much ahead of their time – and more topical than ever today.

... more Published proceedings. Awarded with First Prize for Best Student Presentation in the Humanities. Members of the Russian Avant-garde were initially eager to participate in the revolutionary reconstruction of a new socialist paradise. This Utopia was to be painted in bright colours. In their "Decree No. 1 - Making the Arts Democratic", Futurists among them such as Mayakovsky declared that the art should abandon the vaults and palaces and that - "Colours should pour through the streets and squares like multi-coloured rainbows, from house to house, and delight and dignify the eyes of passers-by. "What they felt was that you could use art to commence changing the world. The whole enormous country needed to be reconstructed. Terms like "new" and "fast" were the key-concepts. The old, odorous, decadent, bourgeois remnants were to be destroyed, and like the bird of Phoenix a New Socialist Brotherhood would rise up from the ashes. In order to rebuild after the czar's realm, a fruitful cooperation of art, craft and industry was to produce standardised and simple but beautiful everyday objects. Based on the cubist economical expression of volume and space, Constructivism was developed at the newly founded think-tank GINKhUK in Leningrad in the 1920s, with Kazimir Malevich (author of painting Black Square) as headmaster. Mikhail Matiushin, head of the Department for Organic Culture, and author of an influential but hitherto completely unknown colour handbook, was his mentor.

Aktuella artiklar i dagspress.

Platser som nämns i föreläsningen: Uppsala, Kungliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i Uppsala, 1800-talets världsutställningar i London, Paris x 4, Wien, Philadelphia, Chicago, Konst-och industriutställningar i Stockholm, Svenska paviljongen i Chicago 1893, mänskligt zoo, Kiruna kyrka, Allmänna konst-och industriutställningen i Stockholm 1897, Gustavsberg, Biennaler i världen A-B, Nigeria, New York, Documenta, Venedigbiennalen, Haus der Deutschen Kunst i München, Batongo, Paul Smith modevisning, Sapmi, Nordiska museet i Stockholm, Etnografiska museet, Benin, Kiruna Stadshus, Murmansk, Kolahalvön, utställningen De namnlösas spår på Upplandsmuseet, Bildmuseet i Umeå, Rasbiologiska institutet i Uppsala, nomadskolan i Vaikijaur Jokkmokk, Världskulturmuseet Göteborg,

Behind the Iron Curtain, the networks of art and technology, science, architecture and design draw a
fascinating map.

Dvizhenie was the first group in the Soviet Union that succeeded to produce big exhibitions “without content” from the point of view of Socialist Realism ideology. How did they manage? This essay gives a historical context for the visual traces and present concrete strategies to realize them.

D'Alleva kapitel "Cultural Studies and post-colonial theory", ur Methods and Theories of Art History London: Laurence King (2004, 2013, 2014, 2015).

Namn som nämns i föreläsningen: Franz Fanon, Carl von Linné, Gustav Wickman, Lennart Pehrson, Artur Sjögren, Gunnar Wennerberg, Richard Berg, Stuart Hall, Hitler, Homi Bhaba, Daniele Tamagni, Paul Smith, Christian Lacroix, Yinka Shonibare, Sten Bergman, Anders Zorn, Tomas Björk, Arthur von Schmalensee, Marja Helander Vardo, Katarina Pirak Sikku, Elsa Tellius, Anders Sunna, Michiel Brouwer, Maja Hagerman, Björn af Kleen, Axel Hirsch, Daniel Werkmäster.
Platser som nämns i föreläsningen: Uppsala, Kungliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i Uppsala, 1800-talets världsutställningar i London, Paris x 4, Wien, Philadelphia, Chicago, Konst-och industriutställningar i Stockholm, Svenska paviljongen i Chicago 1893, mänskligt zoo, Kiruna kyrka, Allmänna konst-och industriutställningen i Stockholm 1897, Gustavsberg, Biennaler i världen A-B, Nigeria, New York, Documenta, Venedigbiennalen, Haus der Deutschen Kunst i München, Batongo, Paul Smith modevisning, Sapmi, Nordiska museet i Stockholm, Etnografiska museet, Benin, Kiruna Stadshus, Murmansk, Kolahalvön, utställningen De namnlösas spår på Upplandsmuseet, Bildmuseet i Umeå, Rasbiologiska institutet i Uppsala, nomadskolan i Vaikijaur Jokkmokk, Världskulturmuseet Göteborg,
