To our knowledge, no studies have yet considered this association. This is surprising given that the literature outside of sport clearly shows that CM is related to revictimization in adolescence and adulthood. Methods: The sample consists of 983 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years old participating in an organized sport. They completed a self-report survey in class at six Canadian schools assessing CM and IV in sport. Logistic regressions were performed to examine the associations between CM and IV in sport. Results: Child physical abuse, emotional abuse, and exposure to domestic violence were significantly associated with psychological violence and neglect in sport. Exposure to domestic violence was the only form of CM significantly associated with physical violence in sport. Child sexual abuse and neglect were signific...

This exploratory study documented the self-management strategies used by adolescents to recover from difficulties related to anxiety and/or depression. Individual interviews were conducted in Montreal, Canada with 49 participants aged 11 to 18 years (28 girls, 20 boys, and 1 non-binary person from various cultural origins) after approval by the Institutional Review Board. Young people were questioned about the self-management strategies they put in place when they felt stressed, sad, or anxious. The data were coded according to the thematic analysis method using an inductive approach. Participants reported 73 self-management strategies, regrouped in four broad themes: (a) I think through; (b) I surround myself with people/animals; (c) I feel and manage my emotions; (...

Qualitative data of nine group discussions composed of 12 past service users and 12 professionals working in local community health centres were analyzed with content analysis. The study revealed that service users expressed mostly negative emotions and views attributed to session limits. This brief report suggests that rigid session-limited psychosocial interventions are perceived negatively and could have adverse consequences on recovery in vulnerable individuals.

Studies estimate that between 14 and 29% of athletes have been victim of at least one form of sexual violence in sport before the age of 18. However, studies suggest that many do not disclose their experience of CSA during childhood. This finding is alarming since studies have shown that the healing process usually starts with disclosure. Moreover, little is known about the healing process of CSA experienced in the sport context. The aim of the study is to present a single case study of a CSA in sport to better understand the global experience over time from the perspective of the athlete. A narrative inquiry approach was adopted. Three non-structured interviews were conducted with the participant. Three pathways in the survivor journey have been identified through inductive thematic analysis: (a) pathway to understanding, (b) pathway to disclosure, and (c) pathway to healing. Th...

Although objective assessment of residential environment has been operationalized through a wide range of tools, few instruments including residents’ perception of this environment have been developed. As part of a larger participatory action research, called Flash on my neighborhood! a total of 62 tenant-researchers living in public housing evaluated their residential environment using the Participatory Neighborhood Observation Grid. Results from this multiple case study show that the novel tool presents 1) tenant-researchers’ self-reported appreciation; 2) the capacity to capture the relevant local knowledge; and 3) complementary quantitative and qualitative data for tailored action planning. The Participatory Neighborhood Observation Grid possesses valuable properties aimed at mitigating certain limitations of the available environment observation tools and is suited for both community development research and practice.

While positive psychology interventions focusing on the well-being of communities and marginalized groups have recently been developed, studies reporting on their nature and characteristics are lacking. The aim of this paper is to examine the nature of community-level positive psychology interventions. It reviews the target populations, intervention modalities, objectives, and desired effects of 25 community-level positive psychology interventions found in 31 studies. This scoping review shows that community-level programs based on positive psychology vary greatly in all these aspects. However, most interventions are aimed at individual-level changes to achieve target group outcomes. Contextual issues such as social conditions, values, and fairness affecting well-being are rarely considered. Discrepancies between community-level positive psychology interventio...

The present study describes the second phase of an action research, aiming to facilitate the empowerment of public housing tenants acting as peer-researchers. Following a Photovoice phase, this second phase focuses on the development and first implementation of a participatory observation method as a tool for evaluating tenants' collective environment fit. A group of nine tenants contributed to develop and later completed an observation grid. The observations were then discussed in decision-making sessions. The participatory observation method proved useful in supporting tenants in their reflection process, promoting the depiction of a nuanced portrait of their residential environment while also prioritizing capacity building. Results are currently used t...

The goal of this feasibility study was to evaluate the acceptability, implementation and perceived usefulness of a new comprehensive self-management tool (Getting better my way) in four care settings in Quebec, Canada. METHOD Care providers offered the tool to people with difficulties related to mood or anxiety disorders during a 7-month period. A sample of 71 participants filled out an online survey and 27 accepted to participate in a follow-up interview. Focus groups were conducted with 82 care providers. RESULTS Satisfaction ratings were high for the tool overall, the likelihood of recommending it to friends, its attractiveness and interest, and its completion time. Perceived usefulness was high overall and was not related to most demographic and clinical variables. No adverse effects were reported. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The study highlight...
