It considers the historic context where this catastrophe was set, a context that made it easy for the earthquake to be thought of as having natural as well as philosophical condition. The paper also deals with how European and more precisely Portuguese and Spanish rendered the event. Further to that, the paper shows that the earthquake was portrayed differently in the official press from the

This article completes that contribution since new evidence has appeared of news items dated in San Sebastian published first in Saragossa and then in Barcelona at the end of that century and the beginning of the eighteenth century.

EnglishGazeta Nueva was edited by the Sevillian printer Juan Gomez de Blas (1661-1667). This is thought to be the most important gazette published in Spanish cities other than the capital, only partly based on the one printed in Madrid.

The knowledge about Early Modern European journalism has undergone a remarkable development in recent decades: however, research on the form of the first newspapers is scarce. The paper presents a corpus of 162 news pamphlets and gazettes published in Seville between 1618 and 1635. An analysis follows considering the presence of engravings on the cover page and their classification. This insight leads to the conclusion that the image did not play a decisive role to draw the attention of readers, even in sensationalist news pamphlets. The illustration is used not to present the events narrated but to stress the genre of the print; about half of the corpus prints have a cover engraving that reproduces a coat of arms, associated with the monarchical power in two thirds of the news sheets: Spanish journalism experienced a growing officialization, prior to the ap...

Despite the different communicative structures, these national journalisms shared professional strategies to inform about the conflicts that occurred in the distant Brazilian lands. Given the difficulty of informing promptly and truthfully, the discourse of the Dutch and Spanish newspapers about their colonies alternates between the information explosion and silence, depending on the alternation between victories and defeats in American territory. News was as connected as were the empires that controlled vast territories in Europe and America, despite the ideological and religious differences of the era.
