To determinate the cracking resistance of seven varieties of cherry in terms of excessive rainfall during fruit maturation, an experiment was initiated at SC Agroindustriala SA Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in a sweet cherry orchard, established in 1996. The spring of 2010 was very rainy one, sum total of rainfalls in May and June 2010 surpassed 3.5 times that a normal year at Cluj-Napoca.

Tuleu timpuriu and Reine Claude d'Althan distinguish for their high productivity (over 20 kg of fruits per tree), Valor for the large fruits (with the average of 68.0 g, but with a lower quality), Vinete romanesti and Vinete de Italia for their extreme susceptibility to the most important diseases (Polystigma rubrum and Plum-pox virus). One of the traditional plum cultivars from Romania, still largely spread in Transylvania, Vinete romanesti, which is very appreciated, both for its fruit taste and for the alcohol distillation obtained, confirmed its estimation due to fruit quality. Vinete romanesti has small fruits compared to the actual commercial requirement of the fresh plum, low productivity, and it is extremely susceptible...

Among pear’s diseases, pear leaf spot, caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella pyri, occurs in Transylvania conditions, Romania, and could produce yield decreases and negative economic effects. At FRS Station Cluj-Napoca, the segregation for pear leaf spot response to attack of F1 pear hybrids belonging to six combinations was analysed. There were studied the seedlings originated in incomplete diallel cross, effectuated with four genitors (Comtesse de Paris, Milenium, Virgiliu Hibernal, Cluj 89-1-81 selection) by direct hybridization, without reciprocal and self-pollination. The seedlings were framed in six classes of their response to leaf spot attack, during two consecutive years, in absence of fungicide treatments, using a scale of notation from 1 (no attack) to 5 (very severe attack). The resistance/susceptibility of seedlings to pear leaf spot attack was considered as quantitative param...

Prevention and control of this disease is often very difficult, especially due to increasing resistance of pathogen s to chemicals used in treatments (Sestras, 2003; Mitre et al., 2009). In Cluj-Napoca condition , Romania, spring of 2010 was a very rainy one in the rain level as well as by number of conse cutive days with rain. Over the high humidity environment was registered favourable temperature levels for infections with scab. The response to natural infection with scab of ten varieties of apples (‘Florina’, ‘Jonagold’, ‘Jonica’, ‘Red Chief Delicious’, ‘Mutsu’, ‘Granny S mith’, ‘Golden Reinders’, ‘Gala’, ‘Topaz’, ‘Pinova’) grown in superintensive culture system (3100 trees/ha), was studied. In this field, placed at UASMV Cluj-Napoca, there has been no chemical treatment or other measures against apple scab in 2010. The climatic c onditions were determined ...

Among the 12 analysed cultivars, the highest sugar content was recorded in ‘Golden Delicious’ (16.7°Bx) and ‘Red Delicious’ (15.8°Bx), regardless of the fruit exposition in the tree crown. At the other extreme are found the cultivars ‘Pioneer’ and ‘Prima’, in which the sugar content was of 12.6 and 13.0°Bx. In most cultivars, the fruit exposed southward in the tree crown have presented a lower sugar content than those exposed in the northern side. The difference is explained by the fact that, while the fruit advance towards the maturation process, due to the slightly more raised temperat...

The trees are vigorous, spreading shape, and with medium crop yield. The fruits have large size, conic shape and mostly red (purple) coloration; they have white flesh with a sweet, crisp, aromatic flavour and low acidity. Fruits become ripe in the last decade of August, first decade of September and the fruits are proper for dessert and well suited for cooking, applesauce, cider, pies.

There were gathered biochemical data for four winter maturation apple varieties: Jonathan, Golden Delicious, Starkrimson and Wagener Premiat, during the months of October (at storage), December and March. The determined biochemical aspects were water, total sugar, and ascorbic acid. The refrigerating storage was better in comparison with the traditional storage, confirmed by biochemical composition. The lowest dehydration was for the apples stored in the refrigerating room. By storage method and apples varieties comparison, the lowest water loss was shown by Wagener Premiat varieties and the highest by Jonathan in refrigerating storage in comparison with traditional storage. Wagener Premiat varieties showed the best qualities even for total sugar and ascorbic acid in comparison with the others a...

The height of the fruits was between 46.7 mm (Red River) and 59.8 mm (Chico Grande), the diameter of the fruits oscillated between 48.0 mm (Event) and 72.4 mm (Natalia) and the form of the fruits was different from one variety to another: spherical for Indiana, high spherical for Chico Grande, Event, Jet, Montego and Line Cluj 8-2002, flattened spherical for Perla Clujului, Natalia and Red River. All the cultivars had fruits with firm flesh; the best firmness was represented by Chico Grande, Event and Line Cluj 8-2002, all these having been prescript as potential genitors for creation of the new varieties with a good firmness of the fruits. It was identified a strong correlation between the shape index and the firmness of the fruits (r = 0.784), which demonstrated that the high-spherical fruits had a more firm flesh than the flattened ones. ...

The efficacy of potassium bicarbonate in comparison with other cupper and sulfphur based fungicides in preventing and control apple scab on seven apple cultivars (Golden Delicious, Starkrimson, Pinova, Idaread, Granny Smith, Gala si Jonica) was tested.Potassium bicarbonate in quantity of 5 kg per hectare proved to be equally effective in reducing attack of apple scab on leaves and fruit of the apple cultivars studied like wettable sulphure (4 kg/ha) or copper hydroxide (5 kg/ha). Results were obtained in a year with favorable conditions of scab development, when untreated variants control had an attack degree (AD%) ranged 19.6-55.6%. Potassium bicarbonate assures the ...

The aphids can cause serious damages and they also represent the main vectors of viruses. That is why one of the objectives of pot marigold breeding is to create resistant cultivars. In present study, 45 genotypes of Calendula, including six species (C. officinalis, C. alata, C. arvensis C. stellata, C. suffruticosa, C. tripterocarpa) and different cultivars, were analyzed for their response to Aphis fabae attack, in natural conditions of infestation. From among all genotypes, 26 (representing 57.8%) have not been attacked. Even if 11 genotypes have provided statistical differences for the serious attack frequency and 15 for intensity of the attack, only three of these have provided statistical differentiations for attack degree. The results demonstrate that aphids are pests that occur in the culture of Calendula with significant frequency...
