David Ponton III

Dr. David Ponton III joined the School of Interdisciplinary and Global Studies in 2017 and is a historian of the twentieth century United States. As a social historian, his research traces the varied consequences of racial residential segregation and the criminalization of racialized spaces for black Americans in the twentieth century, which includes his work on police violence and intimate partner violence. His work utilizes traditional historical methodologies as well as geographic information systems (GIS). Both in teaching and research, his interests include African American history, gender and society, and the sociology of race. As a trained educator, prior to joining USF, Dr. Ponton served as a history instructor at Rice University (Houston, TX) and a social studies teacher at Ewing High School (New Jersey).
