Methods: a total of 840 speech samples was analyzed in this study. The samples were rated by three experienced judges with consensus regarding the aspects of hypernasality and pharyngeal fricative. The ratings were distributed into 4 groups: G1: 255 samples rated as representative of presence of hypernasality; G2: 130 samples rated as representative of use of pharyngeal fricative and hypernasality; G3: 280 samples rated as representative of normal speech for speakers with history of cleft palate; G4: 175 samples rated as representative of normal speech for speakers without history of cleft palate. Satistical analysis involved the Kruskal-Wallis test and when significant difference was found Dunn's test was used to compared pairs of data. Results: the ratings established with agreement between the 3 experienced judges allowed for the identificatio...

Clinical report: The patient in question was submitted to total rehabilitation of the upper arch with fixed metalceramic prosthesis and milled metal crowns connected by bars, associated with the use of an overlay removable partial denture (ORPD) retained by extracoronary clamps and a bar-clip system, giving back the patient aesthetics and the correct maxillo-mandibular relationship. Conclusion: We can conclude that planning correctly and applying fixed partial dentures associated with overlay removable partial dentures (ORPD), play an important role in the functional, aesthetic and psychological rehabilitation of these individuals.

Methods: Nasalance scores were obtained from 62 middle-aged (45–59 years) and 60 elderly (60–79 years) participants with normal speech for 3 nonnasal, 1 phonetically balanced, and 2 nasal-loaded test sentences using the Nasometer II 6400. The data were combined with a published data set of 237 speakers in 4 groups: children (5–9 years), adolescents (10–19 years), young adults (20–24 years), and mature adults (25–35 years). A repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to investigate differences between the stimuli by gender and age groups. Results: There were statistically significant effects of stimulus, gender, and age group, as well as a stimulus-age group interaction effect and a gender-age group interaction effect. The females’ mean nasalance scores were higher than those of the males. The mean ...
To describe the speech of a patient with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) and severe speech disorders ... more To describe the speech of a patient with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) and severe speech disorders before and after participating in an Intensive Speech Therapy Program (ISTP). The ISTP consisted of two daily sessions of therapy over a 36-week period, resulting in a total of 360 therapy sessions. The sessions included the phases of establishment, generalization, and maintenance. A combination of strategies, such as modified contrast therapy and speech sound perception training, were used to elicit adequate place of articulation. The ISTP addressed correction of place of production of oral consonants and maximization of movement of the pharyngeal walls with a speech bulb reduction program. Therapy targets were addressed at the phonetic level with a gradual increase in the complexity of the productions hierarchically (e.g., syllables, words, phrases, conversation) while simultaneously addressing the velopharyngeal hypodynamism with speech bulb reductions. Re-evaluation after the ISTP re...

Nasalance scores of preexisting passages (oral ZOO-BR, low-pressure oral ZOO-BR2 and NASAL-BR), new nasalance passages (oral Dudu no zoológico, oral Dudu no bosque, oral-nasal O cãozinho Totó and nasal O nenê) and Brasilcleft articulation screening sentences were collected from 245 speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, including 121 males and 124 females, divided into 4 groups: children (5-9 years), adolescents (10-19 years), young adults (20-24 years) and adults (25-35 years). Across all nasalance passages, adult females scored on average 2 percentage points higher than males. Children scored 2-4 percentage points lower than older groups for the preexisting nasalance passages ZOO-BR and ZOO-BR2. Nasalance scores for the new nasalance passages were not significantly different from the preexisting passages. Scores for high-pressure sentences did not differ significantly ...
