Richard is a graduate of the University of Cambridge (Magdalene), the University of New England, the University of Southern Queensland and Deakin University.

His research interests cover war & society, international relations, military geography, human geography and ethnic identity, cultural history.

He teaches contemporary international studies and international relations at the University of Southern Queensland, and as an Australian army reservist served in the Middle East in 2006-7 and 2008-9.

The English language educational heritage that has passed on to writers in what were once colonie... more The English language educational heritage that has passed on to writers in what were once colonies has had a significant impact on English literary history, yet as peripheral Australians we appear to receive this when it comes legitimised from the literary centre in Europe rather than from the margins, even though these margins might actually constitute the centre of our own region. One has only to consider the reception of 'Indian' writers in English such as Rushdie and Naipaul to appreciate this. Both are from the European centre whereas K.S. Maniam is part of the global periphery. Therefore, when we look at Maniam's The Return and In A Far Country, the opportunity exists for absorption of a new literature in English direct from its source, a source placed within our region. This is advantageous both in terms of pure literary pursuit and also in terms of understanding a region that perpetually fills non-Malaysians with cultural confusion. That Malaysia, the locale of these two novels, falls into this category as a nation with which Australia has had conflict in recent years makes the reading of Maniam's books a logical step for Australians seeking some insight into the region. Introduction: Understanding Communication, Interpreting, and Language in Wartime

This chapter introduces the collection and concentrates on the topics of cross-cultural communica... more This chapter introduces the collection and concentrates on the topics of cross-cultural communication, translation, and interpreting in the context of, and in relation to, war. It examines the growing field of research on the area of language and war, and argues that communicating and interpreting are centrally important activities in the context of war. A focus on the human dimension through selected case studies of interpreters allows readers to understand the challenge of understanding how people experience language(s) in the context of war and also seeks to shed light on the challenges that communication and language pose for military logistics and policy. Finally, this introduction provides an overview of the key themes and content of the collection.

Representations of war can emphasise hyperrealist levels of violence, pathos and heroism but this... more Representations of war can emphasise hyperrealist levels of violence, pathos and heroism but this does not represent the real experience of most soldiers. For most soldiers war comprises tedium, routine work and occasional violence, but these images are not part of the spectacle of war that we construct and consume. The vast majority of war film discourse is focused on ‘realistic’ or ‘critical’ war films that represent small, isolated peaks of military experience. Representations of war in film and media range from the Second World War model of mythic heroism, the Vietnam era genre of disillusionment and despair, or for the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts the image of soldiers as war junkies raised in an amoral historical vacuum. In an environment where actual media images of the YouTube war are readily available online, and where many western communities are increasingly divorced from daily contact with real soldiers, this essay examines the distorted misrepresentation of the war on terror, with reference to case studies that include The Hurt Locker, Restrepo and Taking Chance.

Ethics review processes are frequently perceived as extending from codes and protocols rooted in ... more Ethics review processes are frequently perceived as extending from codes and protocols rooted in biomedical disciplines. As a result, many researchers in the humanities and social sciences (HASS) find these processes to be misaligned, if not outrightly obstructive to their research. This leads some scholars to advocate against HASS participation in institutional review processes as they currently stand, or in their entirety. While ethics review processes can present a challenge to HASS researchers, these are not insurmountable and, in fact, present opportunities for ethics review boards (ERBs) to mediate their practices to better attend to the concerns of the HASS disciplines. By highlighting the potential value of the ethics review process in recognising the nuances and specificity across different forms of research, this article explores the generative possibilities of greater collaboration between HASS researchers and ERBs. The presumption that Queensland has an inherently conservative popular culture was promulgated on... more The presumption that Queensland has an inherently conservative popular culture was promulgated on social media through the # Quexit phenomena following the 2019 Australian election, with the associated false presumption that Queensland was responsible for the election result. These two books examine right wing populism in Australia and the rise of Pauline Hanson's One Nation party. My review demonstrates that although the diversities of regionalism and the Queensland sense of difference outlined in the work of novelist Thea Astley certainly have shaped Queensland culture, populism is a far more complex political phenomenon that deserves serious analysis. This is an Australia-wide phenomenon and purportedly progressive states such as New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania have also contributed to populist and right wing conservative trends in Australian politics, making Queensland less unique than often supposed

Fuller's account of her childhood, growing up in Rhodesia – now Zimbabwe fits into the field of coming-of-age and development of identity memoir, yet is also situated in the genre of post-independence White identity novels, notably those of Peter Godwin (Mukiwa, When a Crocodile Eats the Sun), Douglas Rogers (The Last Resort) and Lauren St John (Rainbow's End). While set in white dominated southern Africa, Fuller's account contains disturbingly familiar echoes to mainstream Australian culture and racial attitudes.
