Unfortunately, although many industries saw significant gains, the health care industry—both large hospitals and small private practices—are slow to consider new technologies. According to the Health Care Information Technology Model (HCIT) and the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Model, a necessary aspect in planning and applying new IT and supply chain techniques is the ability to compare and benchmark the organization. Whereas some research is available for hospitals (Malin, 2006), little work has been done for private medical practices. In this paper, the authors benchmark IT practices in terms of staffing efficiency and importance of usage to compare medical practices in the United States and Taiwan. The authors develop a set of efficiency measures for private medical practices that they correlate with types of IT usage, barriers to IT usage and extent of IT usage.

Specifically, it has overlooked the intermediary role that dynamic capabilities play in the relationship between ECS and performance. This explains why previous research, while correct in theory, found conflicting statistical results between environmental collaboration upstream and various performance outcomes. This study examines the following questions: What is the impact of environmental collaboration on manufacturing and environmental performance in outsourcing relationships? Do capabilities mediate the relationship between environmental collaboration and performance? Further, we propose that one particular mediating factor—innovative capabilities (ICs)—can influence the strength of this relationship and thus explain why previous research found conflicting statistical results. This paper uses structural equation modeling to analyze survey data from 247 North American manufacturers that outsourced their manufacturing. IC fully mediates the relationship between ECS and manufacturing performance and partially mediates the relationship between environmental collaboration and environmental performance. These findings enrich existing knowledge as it views ECS through the lens of resource‐based theory. Further, we shed light on the crucial role of IC in firms that choose to outsource critical capabilities. From a managerial perspective, the empirical results will inform outsourcing managers making strategic and tactical decisions to achieve desired environmental and manufacturing outcomes.

This book reviews the evolution of supply chain management concepts and discusses trends in global markets and strategic competitiveness. It then focuses on the major issues involved in managing a competitive supply chain including: forecasting, inventory management, distribution, dealing with uncertainty, reverse logistics, and customer service. Coverage of the dynamic, evolving issues pertaining to supply chains that affect the global business community concludes the book. With this book in hand, you’ll be better equipped to conceptualize the management of supply chains as a collection of business processes; identify primary and secondary value chain processes; distinguish between the umbrella term, “supply chain management,” and its component functions; and understand the basic tools of forecasting and the need for accurate data and forecasts on which to base supply chain management decisions

In addition, the authors identify a significant difference in the effects of international strategic orientation on international responsiveness among subgroups of INVs.Practical implicationsGiven the specific context of the sample, this study provides unique managerial insights for entrepreneurs planning to internationalize their new ventures from emerging economies.Originality/valueThe paper adds originality and value by extending research on international responsiveness, bridging two disciplines, and using a unique international, multi‐country sample.

The typical franchise requires system-wide conformity and standardization. Yet, most franchisees are more than merely entrepreneurs with an instruction manual and so they desire independence, and addressing this paradox of desire for autonomy versus the desire for standardization represents a major challenge for franchisors. Utilizing a sample of 274 franchised fitness center locations across the United States, this study reports a negative relationship between a franchisee’s appetite for independence and their center’s financial performance. However, we also report that this adverse relationship is positively mediated when channeled through the franchisee’s personal initiative and self-awareness. These findings suggest that although the desire for autonomy may not be the most desirable franchisee disposition, its detrimental impact ...

Some of these countries adopted the euro such as the case of Montenegro in 2002, Slovakia in 2009, Estonia in 2011, and finally Latvia in 2014. Adoption of the new currency helped these countries further integrate into a larger market, the Eurozone, and stabilize their economies against heavily fluctuating exchange rates. The governments of Ukraine and Russia, on the other hand, did not show interest to join the Eurozone and followed more independent currency policies along with the limited economic liberalization during the period of the 90s and the early 2000s. Similarly, Turkey, not a former Eastern Bloc country, but located geographically very close to these two countries did not peg its currency to the euro or the US dollar. All of these three economies in Eastern Europe had multiple deep financial crises, inflation, devaluations, and weak g...

This study explores the differential effects of various factors on assimilation stages. This study uses meta-analysis technique to quantitatively synthesize prior research data to determine the differential effects of factors on assimilation stages. In total, 400 findings on 40 relationships involving 11 factors and four stages of SCM-IS assimilation were used to conduct 29 Z-tests to determine the differential effects of factors on stages. Our findings show that organizations will benefit from attention to different factors at different stages of the assimilation process in efforts to incorporate SCM-ISs into their strategies and operations. Findings of the study are useful to managers as they navigate the process of assimilating SCM-ISs in their operations.

The purpose of this paper is to better understand those antecedents and to explore why the supply chain (SC) literature has found mixed results regarding knowledge transfer and absorptive capacity in dyadic collaboration research.Design/methodology/approachThe critical incident technique (CIT) was utilized, using qualitative semi-structured interviews to refine a proposed research model. In total, 43 executives were interviewed each providing a description of both a successful and an unsuccessful SC dyadic collaboration. The interviews were analyzed to better understand the knowledge-based antecedents of buyer–supplier collaboration.FindingsThis study suggests that dyadic collaboration and subsequent outcomes are improved by successful knowledge transfer. Additionally, knowledge transfer requires both distributive and absorptive capacities in ...

A nomological model is developed that examines the mediating role of relational capital (supplier trust) on the relationship between structural capital (socialization and information sharing) and innovation capability. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted on 357 US executives. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the hypothesized relationships. Findings Information sharing and formal socialization activities increased the buying firm’s trust in its key supplier. However, formal socialization activities within the context of the business environment did not have a significant direct impact on buyer’s innovative capabilities; but when mediated by trust, it positively impacted innovation capabilities. Informal socialization within the c...
