I am a Christian scholar who is interested in: (1) applying modern linguistic theories to studying biblical texts; (2) perceiving the communicative intent of authors through identifying the way they structure their text (literary structure); and (3) considering what the content of the Bible would mean at the time and in the place that it was composed (historical context).

The Old Testament repeatedly indicated that the Baal cult was a serious problem in Israel, which gives good cause to consider whether Isaiah interacted with their texts. The analysis of genre, literary structure, and lexical parallels yields the probable conclusion that Isaiah parodied the Athtar pericope from the Baal Myth. This investigation also elucidates at least one of the methods of subtle indictment that the prophets used when speaking to a nation that was thoroughly familiar with the Baal cult. Additionally, the text of Isa 14:12-15 is shown to be an example of prophecy by comparison of a myth to the future.
