Paul Cohen
Paul Cohen’s areas of interest are early modern French history, the social history of language, state-formation, the early modern Atlantic, French North America, and French-Amerindian interactions. He also pursues work in several areas of modern French history: the history of French universities; state economic policy since 1945; and the politics of urban planning in Paris. His first book, entitled Kingdom of Babel: The Making of a National Language in France, 1400-1815, is forthcoming with Cornell University Press.
He is currently at work on two book projects:
- Mediating the Languages of Empire: French, Amerindians, and the Politics of Linguistic Difference in French North America
- Translation on the Main: Seaborne France and the Maritime Mediation of LInguistic Difference in the First Age of Globalization
