Based in a Marxist-feminist perspective on social movements, they discuss the relationship between the everyday life experiences of activists, and the social circumstances which form those experiences. While both take everyday experience to be their point of departure, PAE reaches out ethnographically to explore the textually mediated relations of ruling that organize those experiences. CMW uses textual accounts of activists' memories to investigate how they participate in their own oppression. This study explores whether the two modes enquiry are compatible and can be used alongside each other. Completed memory work and political activist ethnography research in social movement contexts will be analysed and synthesized to understand the compatibilities, and contradictions between the two modes of enquiry, as well as the limits and potential benefits of their combination.

Lehrstellensuche analysiert.

This paper explores the ideological concept of migration background and how adolescents become inserted into diversity management procedures and the labour market by categorizing them as “clients with migration background”. The ideological category of “migration background” lacks the relation to actual migration experiences, but condenses racialized processes of exclusion-inclusion rooted in the history of “guest worker” labour migration to Austria in the 20th century. Diversity Management occults this history and individualizes and culturalizes the challenges of “clients with migration background” in the labour market. As clients, the teenagers become integrated in bureaucratic institutional relations of a workfare regime which aims at reproducing a German speaking, disciplined proletariat. Using Institutional Ethnography as a mode of enquiry, this paper traces the procedures by which teenagers are included into the labour force and its reserve army, while excluded from social upward mobility. 21 narrative interviews, eight key informant interviews, participant observation, ethnographic document analysis and participatory theatre work at the Vienna's youth centres and labour office form the empirical basis of the research presented in this paper.

It's based on experiences from an action research project on the topic of 'precarious life' in 2007. The project was conducted by 'keine_uni', which is a self-organized open-university aiming to involve students and people out of marginalized groups in Vienna (homeless, unemployed, immigrants...) in collective learning processes. In the research project students of social sciences worked together with professional artists and formerly homeless and still unemployed people to explore their everyday experiences of precarious life and relate them to social structures which shape their lives. Every group member worked on an own artistic project describing precarious situations in his/her life. The pieces of art were presented in several exhibitions in public places (railway station, culture centres...) where discussions with visitors were organized. The paper reflects the whole process from the point of view of a member of the research group focusing on aspects of methodology and group dynamics.
